texture hick-up

:wallbash: Somehow I managed to create quite a mess with the textures for male bodies (running rob's v4), bodies appear mostly uni-colored with some lighter spots here and there. Females seem to be mostly unaffected although they lost some hair... down south... I take it that's all the rave nowadays,but... ah, not so important anyway. Well, now I could of course post my (rather long) load order and additionally what's tagged with what... but I'm rather tired of bothering people with such things. Nah, time to learn how to sort such issues out myself. I'm halfway familiar with obmm an wrye bash, but I guess I need to learn how to use some more tools. The CS still is a mystery to me, but as far as I get it that isn't what I need anyway. So.... err... what then? How do the experienced users track down such issues? Maybe someone cann point me to a good tutorial or write down some general guidelines? Preferably something not tooo hard to read, as I am, although I do my very best to hide it, not a native speaker and weird enough, people tell me my writing ain't that bad, but often enough my reading skills reach their limits. Understanding dev_akm's setup instructions for FCOM was... a task in it's own right. So, light reading preferred, but of course, if there's no way around it I'll bite my way through any labyrinthical mass of letters. Determined to get this into my head once and for all. Thx for your time and thank in advance for any input.

Cheers,

I did A) which probably wasn't the brightest thing to do, but at that point in time I thought like "won't uninstall rob's anyway, no need to bother with the omod... " Yeah, right... I take it there is no way to avoid deleting the whole folder structure then? That'll be a whole lot of mods to reinstall then. *sigh* Ok, lesson learned, omods only from now on then. What's left to learn is how to build my own, I usually do that only when a script comes with the mod. But that's documentated, so I'll just need to get of my lazy ass and start reading. Helpfull tip there, to check for 'double' folders (V-i).

On the subject of broken downloads: I'm sure that is not the case, cause all active mods have been working, alas not in this very combination. Anyway, I always wondered why modders don't put a md5-sum or hash in their read-me, that could easily prevent any gripes in that area. With utilities like hashtab (many others out there, but that's my fav.) it is easy for both ends of the distribution line. Established procedure in the open source world, so why not do the same?

Any hope to avoid the upcoming installation orgy by applying some more of VI.?

And thanks again for your help, Ethre.

No, there IS a way to avoid deleting the folder structure.

Download a new copy, look inside the folder, and manually find/delete each file included with the download. This may take a little searching (hint, use the search function). :)

Yeah, I've wondered about the checksum deal sometimes too - but it may in part be due to the small (relative) size of many mods, and that they (in general) apply no permanent changes to your system.

Do I have to delete each file that has a counterpart with the same name in the donwload or just the identical ones? For example with /meshes: I got 39 identical files and additionally 18 with the same names but different sizes. Do I have to delete 39 or 57 files? (Applied VI and a tool called dircomp) ;)

Delete the files that are identical to the ones in the mod download (they will likely be in a directory path that is a bit off of where they should be - that's why you were having problems).

So if there is a file called "example.nif" in the download, search for "example.nif" in your Oblivion\Data folder. Check to make sure it is the same file (same file size should do), and then delete it. Do the same for all the other files in the mod download (it might help to extract the mod archive to your desktop or somewhere, and delete each of the files within the download at the same time as you delete their conterpart in your Oblivon\Data folder).

Make sense?

I would leave the ones with different sizes - they are likely components of other mods.

However, when you reinstall the mod you will likely get asked to "overwrite existing file" for several files - you should probably do this.

Makes perfect sense, problem solved, thank you very much. Btw, that dircomp thingy was able to detect different files even if they are of the same size, so that must be doing some checksums too. Handy little program, guess I'll keep it. I think I will be able to resolve the remaining issue with the females on my own now. Kudos for patience, clarity and general helpfulness.

Let me know if you need a translatiion of anything (that offer is open to anyone, just pm me), usage is really simple though. Just drop folder A on the right side, folder b on the left side and click 'Dateienvergleich'. To order the results by comparison result click on <-> and that's it.
