Getting NPC actors to bash with a ranged weapon

Well for whatever reason they refuse to use the custom "one in the chamber" 44 pistol in melee combat.

 

Maybe they don't recognize a good pistol-whipping, only rifle butt-stroking.

Are they using two comabtstyles? One long range, and one close?

Or.. just one combat style stating to bash if only 1 round is in the chamber?

I have tried switching combat styles to force melees when the miss a shot (so don't get more ammo) and they always unequip the gun and switch to fists :(

 

I even put in a script that force equipped the gun on unequip and they still use fists ... grrr.
