Help Saving Follower

I'm new to modding and am currently working on creating my second follower (and potentially my first mod to share). I was able to successfully create a simple follower the first time around. My second follower is much more complex and I'm having problems with the saving process (I think).

The problem:

When I find my newly created follower in game I can't make her my follower.

The problem is the missing relationship info. I didn't forget to set it up it just doesn't save with the .esp

Every time I go into fix the relationship values I am forced to create a new .esp file to save the changes (instead of just saving the changes to the current .esp). I then activate the new .esp, deactivate the old .esp, and load the game only to find I still can't make her my follower due again to missing relationship values.

Relationship Values (always ends up going missing):

Parent: My characters ID

Child: Player

Faction Values (never goes missing):

-1 CurrentFollower

0 PotentialFollower

Possible related problem:

I'm not sure if I need to save after adding my follower to the game. All the tutorials I've seen show saving the mod then adding the npc to the game. If I can get my follower to work I would like to add her to the countless list of follower mods (difference being that she's a very balanced and useful follower for close combat builds) here on Nexus and on Steam.

Thanks for your help!

It wasn't. It was a completely new follower built from 'scratch'.

I just gave up and started over with a new character. It took me 1/2 hour max to design a new follower (used the same .npc file) and with the same setup (different name) it worked. I exported her facegen at the end of the process but in game I found out it hadn't worked (mismatched face/body skin tone). I had left the CK open in case I needed to change anything and I went back and tried and tried to export the textures with not luck. Finally I restarted CK and was able to export facegen. And now she works great.

Also in addition to the relationship issue I had difficulties placing my character in game. Out of 15 attempts I only succeeded twice in placing her in game and then the stupid relationship bug didn't allow me to make her a follower. Oh well, I learned a lot more about CK and modding than I ever would've had I been successful.

I was also having difficulties saving Character Classes...so many problems...but all in the past! :)

She should be a great follower. Levels up with player and well-balanced so that she doesn't slow down the player's leveling.

  • 3 months later...

When you are loading your .esm into the creation kit you should try to highlight the mod you're working on and click the button in the bottom left corner "set as active file" this may fix you're issue. You will also have to make a new relationship that time but it should stay after that hopefully. (note you should always set the mod you're working on as the active file) here's a screenshot hope I helped! :D
