Fallout: Nicaragua

Sorry for disappearing, heh. The semester ends this week, so I'm planning to put my attention unequivocally on Fallout for the next month or so.

OK, so I've been thinking about the lake, or more precisely if I want to "drain" it. My thoughts are that one of the lakes and/or the region would have suffered not from the Great War (at least not directly) but from a massive volcanic eruption and/or man's attempts to play god, as it were. Basically they were practicing Terraforming, before and possibly after the war, which may or may not have triggered or exacerbated a volcanic eruption. As to the terraforming, well this is Fallout. Corrupt executives with god-complexes fit right in.

As to the terraforming, well it could be everything from outlandish (even by in-universe standards) attempts to harness volcanoes or earthquakes to hammer the terrain into shape, to detonating "small" nuclear warheads deep underground to literally carve out a bay connecting the lake with the ocean. Add in some FEV "clean up" for the finishing touches. Drastic and hell of a mess.

The rationale is that I want some zany sci-fi freak shows in one or both of the lakes, and an isolationist Aztec-wannabe power elite isolated from the hellish nightmare outside of their fairy-land. For instance part of the (partially drained) lake could be domed over, or be a submerged city-state a la Rapture. The "old cities" e.g. Grenada and Managua would be kind of like the Sierra Madre, decaying New World opulence infested with various sci-fi hazards and the rabbles' settlements; thus setting up a scenario not unlike the Pitt, with the corresponding choices vis a vis tyranny and squalor. The "drastic" changes would also allow me to play fast and loose with the environment; I could limit the jungle to the FEV areas, or set the mod entirely beneath the lake or even in a domed lakebed.

Partially, the freshwater in the lake would be a valuable resource after the apocalypse at it would be relatively clean, and the lakebed is above sea level. A massive eruption or two plus some drastic meddling could alter the landscape quite dramatically.

Partially, I'd love a free hand to play god with the terrain. Partially I want to make things more interesting by wrecking the oasis I've set up. Partially I like lava and terraforming.

Anyway, I really need to anchor myself to something. Too much thinking and not enough creating, I'm really not sure where to begin, or how... doing one of the cities would probably be a good start, as the general idea and layout is fairly solid compared to the various jungle, lake or volcano threads. It could also borrow a lot from Dead Money's villas and such.

Thoughts?
