still getting a TON of error-less CTDs, and the not-infrequent spontaneous freeze.

EDIT: game is officially unplayable. getting DOZENS of CTDs per hour. instant, unprovoked, with no error messages, and nothing the papyrus log i havent seen 1000000s of times before. literally every 2-4 minutes. all for the hubris of trying to play without ASIS. btw, playing with it is just as bad.

GG bethesda. ive ALWAYS run an insanely modded game, and this never happened in Morrowind or Oblivion.

From a quick look at this thread is the general consensus that ASIS leads to some ctd issues?

I just started a new game, had a ctd about 2 hours outside bleakfalls barrow. I have swapped in some mods after i started= bad practice i know= but it was only to take out coverwoman and put in bella, not something that should cause problems

My papyrus before the ctd

When I was using the updated version before 1.8 Beta I had a number of CTD and freezes. The always occured in the games outer world never in town or inside a building, cave, fortress etc. Occasionally I had a CTD when leaving a structure (going through a door) Other times it seemed random and always in the outside world, I did notice the more mods running, and the more leveled a character is or a large inventory of items seemed to increase the frequency of CTDs. Also bad mods (mods with issues such as graphics not displaying right on an item (example armor in Female Heroic Stormcloak Armor included in Immersive Armors (later versions) CTD all the time when equipped) increased CTDs. Some Housing mods I had trouble with too. Even with these removed or rolled back to versions that did not include problem mods (immersive armors without Herioc Stormcloak Armor) I still had random CTDs sometimes before Skyrim even fully loaded and other times not for two hours. When I would quit I always had CTD upon exiting either to the desktop directly from the in game quick menu or the main menu.

As for freezes I always had them in the outer world when running or riding a horse that was running. Boom no warning just froze. The only way to get out of this was to play Skyrim in windowed mode, have other folders open on my desktop and alt-tab from Skyrim to the other folders back and forth sometimes even pressing the windows key. Eventually Skyrim would work again but I would always be stuck with a double cursor (Skyrim cursor and Windows cursor) until I exited the game and restarted it. I do not use ASIS, SkyRE, BOSS, or other load modifying programs. I do use SKSE and have both Dawnguard and Hearthfire installed. I did have some problems before installing Dawnguard and before Hearthfire, but they seemed to increase with version 1.7. Before I upgraded to 1.7 I could usually exit without CTDs after always CTD. Before I had stutters in game play even at the games lowest settings (My computer is a high end gaming computer with a 1GB Nvidia graphics card which should be able to run Skyrim easily at Ultra settings if you go by the games requirements but doesn't). After upgrading to 1.7 I started having more CTDs and many freezes as described above. I tried unofficial patches for all three (Skyrim and the DLCs) and a FPS booster mod without success. I have also tried the sound setting suggestion given elsewhere I think in the forum. I have tried setting my graphics card to performance and reducing windows graphics demands to more performance oriented as well as shutting down non essential programs and services. All did not work.

Since upgrading to 1.8 Beta I have noticed that I have not have had anymore CTD when exiting Skyrim. I had one CTD when trying to dismount a horse. I use the Convenient Horses mod and think the CTD may have been related to it. A possible glitch that occasionally occurs where the character can not dismount the horse even after saving and reloading or exiting completely and starting Skyrim again. My character is at a very high level, I have a fair amount of inventory, many quests, and about 30 to 40 active mods (many more installed - over 100 but not active). Most are low to medium in demand - except maybe Convenient Horses, BFF Animal Companions, Beyond 81 and Experience Reduction (a expanded leveling and perk mod allowing level 81 to be exceeded and more perks to be gained), Dragon Lords, and a couple of ENB mods. I did read somewhere that Skyrim does have a cap on the number of mods that can be run with it. I think too many high demand mods can greatly effect performance as well and lead to more CTDs and freezes. 1.8 Beta seems to be more stable than 1.7, but I have not seen enough yet if the outer world freezes are less or have stopped. I think the CTDs may be less. The fact Skyrim no longer seems to CTD on exit does suggest that maybe 1.8 Beta at least improves on the CTD issue. If the CTDs are caused by to many mods, too many high demanding mods, corrupt mods, or conflicting mods then 1.8 Beta will not resolve the issue. Load order is important too. I follow suggested load orders for various mods loading before or after others if stated in their description page, and also load esm files first including DLC expansions, then patches that are esm then esp patches, any high demand mods, mods changing textures in the world, character textures, weapon textures, leveling mods, housing mods, crafting mods, and last mods adding items. I only use the Skyrim launcher to modifiy order and the order stays as I arrange it. All of my mods are manually installed. I do not recommend manual installation for less experienced users. I prefer mods with loose files over mods using only bsa files for installation as I have read that the bsa formats can cause more scripting problems then loose file versions. I do recommend for any mod installation whether manual or with the Nexus Mod Manager that a backup clean version of the Skyrim data folder be kept and if possible backups of the main files as well without any installed mods. If all else fails the clean files/ folders can be used to replace the corrupted ones ones the corrupted ones are deleted without completely reinstalling the game. A full re-installation should be a last resort. Also I do not think a clean start is the answer, but setting the compatibility setting for Skyrim to Windows 7 Basic (lower three check boxes - not 256 colors or resolution boxes) and checking play as administrator might help. Also do not have a browser open (Explorer or Firefox) if possible - these use a lot of system memory and considering temporarily disabling anti-virus software on low end computers too (also a system resource hog) when playing Skyrim. These suggestions might reduce the CTDs and freezes but not stop them. Also the freezes are not local to any specific area and are completely random. I have experienced freezes all over the outer world of Skyrim and both in combat in the outer world or just running around. Outside of errors cause by mods I think Skyrim itself suffers from instabilities. The freezes I think are performance related due to the computers memory, graphics, and processing capability. Skyrim's demands are very high for graphics demand, memory usage (especially at certain times in the game or after extended game play), and does put a large load on the computer processor contrary to the specs listed for the game. I have seen this in other high end games (Caesar IV, Fable III) and the only time the freezing/stuttering finally stopped altogether was when I significantly upgraded my computer to a faster computer, significantly more memory, and more than double the graphics memory. It could be Skyrim will only run really well on a computer with over 2GB graphics memory, 8GB physical memory, and a 4 or better Ghz processor. Unfortunately such a fast processor has not been invented and 2GB graphics cards are very expensive. It would be nice if the developers where a little more truthful about a game's requirements. As for CTDs 1.8 Beta is more stable that 1.7. 1.7 had serious issues that the version before it did not even have. It was a bad upgrade like some driver upgrades are good and others are not. It remains to be seen if future patches beyond 1.8 Beta if there are to be any further improve stability (less CTDs). Occasionally I have seen game official patches improve stuttering/lagging but not very often. It would also be nice if DLCs put out where less buggy too instead of adding to problems already in the original game. All game manufacturers could stand to learn this lesson. Release slower and have a cleaner, better tested product.

Horosha,

Dead thread my friend. Look at the last post date before you. I would suggest starting your own thread.

By the way, if you do, post some more info like what mods you just added, where you are crashing, etc.

However, I believe your problem is that your bashed patch and Asis esp's are in the wrong place. They should be at the bottom. Fix this and then rebuild them.

Whoops, thought it would still be an appropriate place to put this. Anyhow, I tried placing both ASIS files at the end of the load order, didn't work. Forgot that I had a bashed patch.esp, wasn't even using it so I deleted that as well. I am getting CTDs right at the title screen once the Skyrim logo is displayed and didn't before I updated some of my mods. The ones I had updated are as follows:

A Place To Sleep v2.3

Alternate Start - Live Another Life v2.1.8a

Better Dialogue Controls v1.2

Categorized Favorites Menu v0.1.17

Crossbows Revamped v2.1

Dual Sheath Plus Shields on Back Dawnguard Edition v1.0

Robed Steel Plate Armor v1.1

Shooting Stars v1.03

SkyUI v3.0

Unofficial Dawnguard Patch v1.1.3

Unofficial Hearthfire Patch v1.0.2

Unofficial Skyrim Patch v1.2.5

This is also my papyrus log before I crash:

Nonetheless, gonna move this to a new thread. Could I get any help from the mods?

Horosha, it sounds like maybe one of your mods needs an dawnguard or hearthfire esp patch and you haven't enabled/DL it, thats a common issue with ctds at start up anyway.

But seriously the main thing i did to make my game stable was to cull my mod list and just keep what was necessary, you have a pretty insane number of mods there, time for trimming ? I went from unstable 50ish to a ctd free life at 30.

It pains me to say this but getting rid of ASIS also helped make my game a lot more stable.
