Oblivion crashes on both new and load game.

Recommended Posts

Just as the title says, I crash every time I try to make a new game or load a previous save. When I click on new or load game, the loading screen comes up, but when it finishes loading it crashes back to desktop with no warning and no error message. Obviously since I have a previous save, this did not occur before. This did not happen before today, and other games run fine. I have not installed any mods. I have had Oblivion for about a month. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Oblivion, which had the same results. I do not have a physical disk of Oblivion, and I have bought and installed Oblivion through Steam.

My specs:

Processor: Intel® Core i5 CPU M 520 @ 240Ghz (4 CPUs), ~2.4Ghz

Memory: 4096 MB RAM

Video card: Intel® HD Graphics (Core i5)

I am also playing on a Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop. I am pretty sure I have the requirements for running Oblivion, since the game was working until today. If my specs were not specific enough, I will give more info. Thank you for any suggestions given.

Of course, there's not enough information to determine exactly why your game stopped working in the first place. I've looked at your comp system and you're setup is very good with a 1 Gb dedicated graphics chipset which should run 'vanilla' Oblivion no problem, but more importantly you have 4Gbs RAM which is most adequate. But from what you've already stated, I'm left to assume that one of the reasons your game won't start now, is because you've 'improperly' uninstalled Oblivion - a difficult task even for the experienced!

So my advice to you would be to first, 'properly' uninstall Oblivion again using Bben's instructions found here:

- from TesNexus.com/Wiki/Oblivion/Oblivion Reinstall Procedure/

- includes 'How to Move Steam Client Location' - active link - explanation below

You'll need CCleaner as well (link provided-above) to clean up your registry after uninstallation is complete, as this alone could be the reason why Oblivion didn't re-install properly - causing CTDs. Just remember to backup your important data like Saves, before completely uninstalling - found here: C:/Users/UserName/MyDocuments/MyGames/Oblivion/Saves/.

Also, something often overlooked by new players... if using Vista or Win7, don't allow Oblivion or Steam to setup the game in their default 'Program Files' directory, install Oblivion outside of Program Files like this -

C:/GameFolder/Bethesda Softworks/Oblivion (create folders as needed). For Steam users refer to Bbens Tut/Steam/Link, or here: >https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?p_faqid=231<

When you've successfully done all of this, logically, the game should work properly. I can't see a reason why it shouldn't after this official prodedure.

Disclaimer- I haven`t used Bbens Re-install procedure myself as I have my own working method, so if you have trouble with this for whatever reason or need anything explained, you can PM me.

AFTERTHOUGHT: I think you're initial CTD problems came from Steam installing Oblivion in C:/Program Files/ which leads to game problems. I can't be absolutely sure because I don't have Steam nor have I installed in Program Files with Vista or Win7, but that's my guess. Anyway, I hope this helps restore your game.
