letum210
Hey, uh, sorry im late. i had the same issue. however, i managed to get through it. it took me about 5-7mins (no fighting, with 2fps) to run up to the objective indicated an lower the drawbridge from the rally point at the stormcloak camp but once i completed it, i dashed for the large doors INTO Whiterun, and found that upon entering the city, my fps was restored. at first it didn't seem to be working, but my screen flashed black once or twice, and then it was running like it usually does at a comfortable but sad 23fps. so i suppose a solution is to just push through it if possible for you. i have no idea what the technical issue is, though there are a few resolutions to it in this thread, but then, there aren't that many options in the matter Next, i fought my way through the city, ok, fine. fought my way into Dragonsreach, sure, whatever. no issues what-so-ever. but just to be sure, after all the fighting was through, i saved and exited the gates to see if "IT" had ended. nope. best bet is to fast travel out of Whiterun and e on with your game. but yea. thats what i got. sgtmonkmann
I know the problem AND the reasoning behind it. Remove fExtraTaskletBudgetMS=xxx from your Skyrim.ini OR reset it to default which is 1.2 The intention of people increasing it is to get better performance when tons of script are calling functions AT THE COST of reduced framerate. I saw a site that recommended setting it to 800 which is obviously way too much when running tons of mods and definitely way too much when running vanilla.Thank you much, this worked for me. CrepusculeCraft
I just wanted to let anyone else who's having this problem know that setting fExtraTaskletBudgetMS=xxx to fExtraTaskletBudgetMS=1.2 worked phenomonally! Even if you manage to crawl through the battle for whiterun like me, don't assume you're safe; this lag came back to haunt me many times in casual gameplay after i finished the battle for whiterun. I know this thread is old now, but it's the top result on Google when you search for slowdown during the battle of Whiterun. I just wanted to let everyone finding this like I did that this solution worked 100%! I have a ton of graphics mods and the game became unplayable when I got to this battle. I did what this person said and changed this setting to 1.2, and it fixed the problem without my having to disable any mods or do anything else at all. I was able to complete the quest and everything, no issues. Honestly, I can't see any difference in graphics quality either. If there's a difference there, it's so minuscule that it's not noticeable. Thanks for the tip, you saved my game!
nunnbt473
I see (Elder Scrolls) "Skyrim_default.ini" and (Elder Scrolls/Skyrim) "SkyrimPrefs.ini", but do not see "Skyrim.ini". I have added and removed launchers and updates and patches and mods galore though, so I have no idea what all that has done in the big picture. The graphics were already turned down to moderate to begin with just as a precaution to avoid this sort of thing. I've been blowing through this entire game FPS with ease. Most games I can run anywhere from 60 to 200 fps 24/7 and have no issue (as long as I don't block the dang fan with my leg and cause it to over heat heh).I never found "fExtraTaskletBudgetMS" in any of my .ini files within the game folders.(Each line a separate individual modified attempt, not cumulative)Setting the "Setting" ingame fade to all minimum did nothing.Deleting those two files did nothing.Deleting High/Medium/Low.ini did nothing. (Both of the following two I noticed had potential to interfere with gameplay/items so I don't recommend trying these and I highly doubt they are the true source of the problem)Tried not using the Unoffical patch.esp, SLIGHT improvement, barely noticeable.. still unplayable.Tried not using Update.esm, SLIGHT improvement, roughly same as above, barely noticeable.Long story short, same as above.. Fast travel into the camp and I see the Catapults in the background and a couple soldiers run by in super slow mo. If its not at 1fps its close to it.In areas with tons of people, suchs a towns that would be in the core game it runs fine. Runs fine anytime I am near necromancers / mages. Its something which appears to be fairly unique to that battle. The only thing that immediately stands out are the catapults. Perhaps some type of lighting / shadow error / anti aliasing something or another going off the scales. I will try fiddling with the nvidia settings and seeing if I can't filter out various aspects and narrow it down.Edit: CPU is set to run on high with all processors and the setting saved indefinitely so it automatically started that way. I tried changing the Nvidia settings based on the tesv.exe program every which way imaginable from anti-aliasing settings to triple buffering and nothing had even the slightest effect on it. Infact, I even tried switching to using my integrated graphics card instead of Nvidia's.. nothing changed. System idle was at 98-99% with the game pulling 1-2% according to task manager. (Tabbed out while full screen). On one random load I did noticing in the Whiterun Military Camp that the soldiers were running through mid air. then suddenly fell where they should be running on the ground. Though this doesn't strike me as odd as it normally "rains mammoths" and I often see dragons "sliding into home" every now and again.I've seen other pages refer to lowering shadow settings (ingame and in .ini prefs) and reducing fade, but that seems to be a secondary problem and not the root cause. Others have recommended disabling particular mods, no one particular mod seems linked to this issue from best I can tell, all the ones that were mentioned however, naturally, were more graphic related. In general: Going back and turning the settings up to maximum and loading a save file outside of that area actually makes the game run smoother. Faster loader times, easier to target /read areas on the main map, near perfect audio sync, walking is almost like gliding, reflections in the water. My ideal settings seem to be around 90% towards max for it to all flow smooth based on the nvidia auto optimization. In the military camp for Whiterun: Nothing at all has any noticeable effect on the FPS and its only limited to that one area. Why does this always happen in areas with the main quests?? I remember something quite similar occurring in Oblivion *smh*. The big tell on this one, is that I also saw other people complaining about this happening on other systems like PS4 where its a hardware controlled environment. Someone had to botch up the code pretty bad for power rigs to drop to minimal settings and still not be able to brute force their way though this one. I am running...Win 7 Home Prem x64Alienware M14xR2, i7 2.40ghz, 8GB RamNvidia GeForce GT 650M 2.0GBDriver 340.52 (Update to date as of the time of this writing)1.9.32.0.8 (SKSE 1.7.1 rel 46)Skyrim.esmUpdate.esmunoffical Skyrim Patch.espSkyUi.espunique Uniques.espCloaks.espMIDFollowMeCloser.espWeapons & Armor Fixes_Remade.espWeapons & Armor_DragonPriestMasks.espWeapons & Armor_FasterArrows.espWweapons & Armor_TrueOrcishWeapons.espEdit 2:Well I'll be damned "C:\Users\user\Documents\My Games\Skyrim\Skyrim.ini". Finally found that damn file. And yes changing that one line fExtraTaskletBudgetMS from 800 to 1.2 fixed the problem. Despite all the updates, patches, nvidia tweaks, driver updates, program optimization, and ingame setting changes... that one file was never reset *smh*. They really need a more complex setting version to track changes, reset them..etc. Edited August 25, 2014 by nunnbt473
