If you use a TV for your computer, have you run into an issue where your games don't play sound unless full resolution?

I have my gaming laptop hooked up via HDMI to a tv. When I boot up a game on full res there's no problem with sound coming from the TV, but when I put it at a lower res the tv doesn't play. sound plays from the laptop at all res though
