Vanilla game hangs on startup, no audio, and severe FPS drop

Greetings everyone!

I have recently attempted to start troubleshooting an issue I had with playing NV in the past that I could never solve. I believe I even posted about it here a few years ago. Essentially, I have the "Vanilla Game Hangs on Startup" problem as described by the Fallout NV Mod Troubleshooting page. I have spent a significant amount of time on it this go around, and I think I have the issue narrowed down to a OS problem with Windows 10. This same issue occurs whenever I attempt to play Fallout 3 and Tom Clancy's ENDWAR as well. I think it may be some Windows 10 issue with older games, but I am by no means a savant when it comes to troubleshooting these issues. I will be posting a lot of information below, but I have tried to condense it has best as possible. If I am leaving anything out then please point it out and I'll provide the necessary info. To those of you not familiar with this issue, it is perfectly described on the NV Mod Troubleshooting page as:

"When you open the launcher, it functions as it should with the music in the background. Also have audio by the time the main menu loads. Whenever you load a game, the loading screen with the roulette wheel has no audio and this screen will freeze for one to two seconds (as evidenced by the ball in the roulette wheel stopping). Screen will then go black for a few seconds, and the game will load, but have no audio at this point and there is severe lag."

My System Specs

- MSI GeForce GTX 1060 3 GB

-Intel® Core™ i5-6400 CPU @ 2.70 GHz

-7.95 GB RAM

-1920 x 1080, 60 Hz Display

My Game and Load Order

1. Fallout NV.esm

2. CaravanPack.esm

3. ClassicPack.esm

4. MercenaryPack.esm

5. DeadMoney.esm

6. HonestHearts.esm

7. OldWorldBlues.esm

8. LonesomeRoad.esm

9. GunRunnersArsenal.esm

10. TribalPack.esm

My Attempted Solutions (In addition to all solutions listed under the Vanilla Game Hangs on Startup section of the Mod Troubleshooting Guide)

1. Reinstalled the game from the disc
2. Reinstalled the game entirely through Steam
3. Verified the integrity of the game cache via Steam
4. Attempted to run the game in Compatibility mode for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows XP, and Windows Vista
5. Updated GPU

6. Ran DXdiag utility that revealed no issues there
7. Turned off V-Sync
8. Deleted NV's ini files and attempted to launch game again.
9. Updated sound drivers
10. Attempted playing game in Windowed mode
11. Installed the game in Safe Mode
-------CAVEAT: I did this from the disc, not through Steam
-------This did give me audio while playing the game bu the FPS issues persisted
-------When I booted the computer out of Safe Mode and attempted to launch NV I lost audio when the save was loaded again
12. Uninstalled the game, deleted all game files and used CCleaner to remove remaining files. I then attempted a clean install via Steam out of Safe Mode

If anyone has any further tips or feedback that would help me in my quest to solve this issue then I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you for your time,
Bing

I keep the "Mod Conflict Troubleshooting Guide" updated, so there isn't much else I can suggest. That you are encountering a similar problem with other games does suggest something related to Windows, but typically that would manifest before you get to the point of loading a saved game. Have you checked the Windows Eventlog for errors related to those games? Please see the "Windows Error Messages" section of the wiki "How to read most Bethesda game error logs" article.

I did notice that the "load order" listed has the POP ESMs before the DLC ESMs, which is not the recommended sequence. Please see the 'First Timer
Advice
' and the 'Towards Game Stability' sections (at a minimum) of the wiki "FNV General Mod Use Advice" article.

Something that has been mentioned recently is that the game has "memory leaks", primarily linked to the audio system due to the version of the Ogg Vorbis Libraries used by Bethesda. Getting 2-3 hours before a CTD is pretty good. The audio problem is fixed by using the updated [http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/61265 Ogg Vorbis Libraries] posted by Kane Wright. I've not seen anything to link this problem with "starting the game" problems, but you are now at the point of grasping at straws, so here is one.

Given your problem doesn't seem to manifest until you are attempting to load a "saved game", it would seem worth asking if you have the problem with a "New Game"? If you don't have a problem in that situation, then most likely the issue is corruption of the same game file. Please see the 'Save-game files' of the "FNV General Mod Use Advice" article.

I recommend anyone (even someone with your prior experience) read the entire "FNV General Mod Use Advice" article to understand the differences between this game and others you may have experience with, and how it should be setup.

Yes so I don't think this is a corrupted save issue, because this occurs as soon as I start a new game as well.

Thank you for the quick response! I will read over those other articles and try their recommendations. I will keep this thread updated.

IT WORKS!

^^^Tried this with no change. Although I imagine it'll help me down the road.

The load order I originally submitted was incorrect. The DLC ESMs were before the POP ESMs; I just misread them from the Data Files listed in the NV launcher.

I kept reading over and over how many people with the same issues just needed to update their Realtek audio drivers. I never had these drivers on my machine in the first place so I just assumed this wouldn't apply to me, but after talking with a friend, she seemed to think that was the issue. I downloaded them and installed without any problems. Restarted the PC and the game has audio with no FPS drop. It runs very smoothly so far.

The only issue now is the audio sounds a little....different? High pitched in some areas and low pitched in others would be the best way to describe it, but I feel like troubleshooting this issue will be a far easier task.

Thank you for all of your help Dubious especially with keeping the Mod Troubleshooting Page updated.

EDIT: High pitched audio issue was solved by rolling back the driver. Thanks again!
