Mod Console Commands

For some reason I can't use any console command that has something to do with mods, the mods install fine but I can't hack in any of the items or people. For example I tried to make this person essential because she wouldn't stop getting killed but I couldn't it just said compiled script not saved. I asked the mod creator what command to use and he told me but when I typed it in it just said compiled script not saved.

Any thoughts

Some console commands work with reference IDs. Some work with base IDs. Consult the wiki to sort this out before you attempt to use a command.

For the record, "setessential" works with base IDs. The ID you get when you click on something in the console is the reference ID. To get the base ID of an actor, you need to type "help <name>", where "<name>" is the complete name of the actor. If there are two or more words, separated by spaces, in that name then you must enclose the name in double quotes (").

Once you have the BaseID, type "setessential <BaseID> 1", without the angle brackets, of course. That last character is a "one" and not an "ell".

I have tried clicking on it but I will try again

I have asked the mod maker what the base ID is but he says he can't remember so I tried to use the help command to get the ID and the mod maker told me what this person was called so I used help but to no end.

Don't rely upon the mod maker, who doesn't seem to have his act together. Either he's no longer supporting the mod or just can't take the time to help someone about his mod. Either way, he's leaving you out in the cold, so you're on your own.

When you interact with the person (such as to have a conversation) you'll get that person's full name. That's what you type with the "help" command. This HAS to work. The game is designed that way. "help" accesses all objects placed in the game as long as you have their names right. Again, just clicking on the character will NOT give you the base ID. It gives you the reference ID, so I don't know why you're persisting upon clicking the character to learn anything. Following is a an exhaustive, step-by-step procedure for setting any actor in the game to essential status.

Interact with the character ("E" key on the PC, unless you have your keyboard re-mapped). Note the name of the character.

Write the character's name down. Don't ignore any punctuation, like dashes or apostrophes in the name.

Click on the character in the console.

Type "help", a space, and the full name of the character, spelled exactly like you wrote it down. Surround the name in double-quotes if there is more than one word (i.e. spaces) in it.

Press your <enter> key.

Write down the base ID the console outputs.

Type "setessential", a space, the base ID, a space, and the number "one" (i.e., "1"), all without the quotes.

Press your <enter> key.

The character is now essential. This will work unless you're doing it wrong.
