Steam - WTH

What is this about latest problems? I cannot seem to find anything on the net about it, but I can see that you must have seen something Moraevik!

I am even madder now because I can manage to download Black Ops (which I don't want) but when I try Skyrim, it says the servers are too busy, try in a few minutes. And this is after refreshing all the Steam files!

Ugh. Uninstalled Steam and reinstalled it and still will not download on the desktop.

The laptop on the other hand is a different matter and I now have my mods going back in off the external HDD.

I really have NO idea what is going on. Let's hope this all works...Steam games on the laptop and I shall go into a major sulk and play Guild wars 2 all night on the desktop.

I'm going by a few reports I've seen of people having the same problem you're having, including two from personal friends who I know IRL. I don't have any first-hand information because I've had Steam offline since it crammed patch 1.5.x down my throat when I had to use it to enable COD:MW3. Have you tried contacting Steam support people, yet?

Another worthwhile suggestion.

However...big drum roll...

I followed the link supplied by Blaufrosch, and then followed a few more from the page that he linked to. Before even attempting to install Skyrim, I deleted existing Steam rules in AVG and set up new ones. I clicked links on the page our colleague linked and arrived at what ports to open for Steam. Now this was strangely familiar because when I was first in the GW2 beta I had to do this to make AVG let it run. Applied meh new roolez, changed my download region to Ireland, and it is now downloading at a respectable 1Mb/s.

I shall be awarding knighthoods to the good and patient people in this thread who have made this possible and who have calmed me down and got me out of my war chariot.
