PedgeJ
I'm actually looking to reinstall mods from an external backup of the downloaded zip files and this is helpful, my only question is will Vortex recognise and 'link' them to Nexus automatically for the purposes of checking for updates? I don't know if the link/url sits in the mod file or is created when they are initially downloaded? You could possibly choose load mods from file, but don't quote me on it. icyhugs
Where's basically 2 ways to backup: 1: Backup the download-archives.2: Backup downloads + mods + %appdata%\vortex Advantage with 1 is, you have a backup of the mod-archives, meaning even if the mod is permanently removed (something that happens more or less frequently), you can always re-install the mod. Disadvantage with 1 is, you'll need to re-install the mods (this is really a fast process, except for FOMOD or other kinds of installers) and you'll need to re-create all conflict-rules. Especially the conflict-rules can take some time. Advantage with 2 is, since you've backed-up everything, all rules etc. can be restored and just hit Deploy and you'll be up and playing the game again. Disadvantage with 2 is, the backup is much larger than only backing-up the downloads. Also any changes to conflict-rules etc. after last backup must be re-created. does it applies to multiple computers too? I have an old laptop which has Skyrim and mods and I wanna have the mods in my new desktop. Will method 2 be the best option?
PedgeJ
I think method 1 would be safer being APPDATA and all, but I am far from an expert. But if the computers aren't going from a powerhouse to a potato, I don't see an issue off the top of my head. I think the other guys in the thread would know more than I. Rattledagger
does it applies to multiple computers too? I have an old laptop which has Skyrim and mods and I wanna have the mods in my new desktop. Will method 2 be the best option? For method 2 to work, make sure mods and downloads are located at exactly the same location on both computers. This can be a problem if example your main computer has mods on E-partition while the laptop only has a C-partition. With method 1 on the other hand it doesn't matter if downloads is located in a different location, since you'll need to re-install all mods anyway. Note, since laptops normally are much weaker than desktop computers, it's possible you want to re-install many of the FOMOD-mods with lower texture-resolutions etc. and not use some of the most demanding mods, so while method 2 works it's possible you'll want to do so many changes anyway that using method 1 is better. edit - ah, it was the other way around, laptop to desktop computer, in this instance the desktop can be so much stronger you want to increase texture-resolution etc. and chances are you won't remove any mods but instead add even more. In this case method 2 will be a good starting-point, where you'll quickly can continue playing and can switch to better texture-resolution etc. later on.
