Skyrim Crashes When .wav Files Are Triggered

Like many, I get freezes and CTD's in exteriors, although it's mostly freezes I'm experiencing. After too many to count, I've come to the conclusion that the crashes/freezing are occurring when sound files are triggered. I've looked high and low online for a solution/fix, but to no avail. So I thought I'd post this issue and see if anyone has a solution. or advice. I have a moderately modded game, and at one time was using SOS, but that was removed due the problems with that mod before this play through. As it is now the only mod that alters sound that I'm aware of is the fus ro YEAH!!! mod that plays a Roger Daltrey sample from We Won't Get Fooled Again. However, I was having this same problem before installing that mod, so I doubt it's the culprit. The only system issue I can think of is my CPU, an I3 540 3.06Ghz. I have a GTX 670 so maybe I'm experiencing CPU bottle necking, but I don't know. It doesn't have to be a heavy NPC battle for this occur. Before coming here to post, I froze when an elk attacked and grunted. If anyone has any info that can help I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm at my whit's end. Thanks.

This is way out there - I have no idea about Skyrim modding since I just started playing - but I've modded other games before; does Skyrim need sounds in any particular format? E.g. there was this one game where if you put in stereo sounds it would crash, it would only take mono sounds (was obvious in hindsight, since the game engine would handle sound positioning itself, d'oh).

Good luck.

Thanks spinfx and Steve :) As it is right now all sounds in my game are vanilla .wav files except the fus ro yeah mod, but this was happening before installing that mod and deactivating it didn't help. My playback devices are set to 16 bit 44.1 Hz. I've deactivated monster mod and monster wars as well as war zones since my original post and I haven't had any freezes are or CTD's yet. The only thing is I REALLY love those two mods. After reading up on MGE's posts on war zones, I've come to the conclusion that my CPU (I3 540) just isn't up to par, and bottle necking and causing the freezes. Hopefully upgrading to an I7 870 quad core will fix this. I'll be upgrading Monday when my CPU arrives, and post back here if things are better after upgrading. Wish me luck, thanks again y'all :) Edited by tgirlshayna

UPDATE:

Well the upgraded CPU didn't seem to help with monster wars. However I was able to reinstall skymo mod and war zones and battle with no freezes when testing near halted stream camp. I consider this a good test zone cause both skymo mod and warzones have spawning points there, and there's plenty of NPC's for a stress test. So I can only conclude that some kind of scripting error with monster wars is the culprit of my freezes. Even with no other mods installed I get repeatable freezes and crashes with monster wars installed. What a shame, I really liked that mod and wanted to be able to play it, but it just makes my game too unstable :(
