[LE] What are the best ways to troubleshoot problems regarding NPC packages?

Recommended Posts

I am completing the final touch on the mod I am creating and notice the game crashes at certain instances. One such is when I get close to Fort Greymoor during a battle. The screen sometimes will freeze and sometime crash. This also happens at villages such as rorikstead. I have added a few groups. Draconians, Amazons, and Draugr have their own factions. Draconians will spawn at their own castles . They travel in two groups of eight with one group staying behind. There are also dragons which travel with each group. One group goes to the Fort in the hold. the other groups attacks the Amazon camp. There is one group which stays behind the castle. Amazon have a similar makeup. They spawn in their Amazon forts one group travels to the Draconian castle , another group goes to the fort and the third group stays behind and guards the Amazon fort. The DRaugrs spawn in the barrows where others are found. They travel at night to the villages and forts . I created a spell where they can summon skeleton warriors, skeleton archers , and skeleton mages which have Zombie staff so they can raise zombies. They travel in groups of eight. During the day Imperials and storm cloaks will march from their camps to the fort in their hold, They travel in groups of 8. there is also a travelling merchant with her bodyguards which travel to the fort and the villages. Hold police and border guards patrol the roads and there are rangers who hunt in the wilds.

I had learned one thing people do is go to windhelm dock and keep spawning npcs until it crashes to determine how many npcs are too much for the game to handle. I did do this. What i did was i spawned stormcloaks and imperials in groups of 16 and 32. I spawned about 200 of each and the game did not crash. I spawned in 10 dragons and that is when the game froze. I figure that if dragon are attacking a fort that they will take up more power. Just out of curiosity how do most mod developers figure out the npc limit?

I am on the last stages of my mod and I have noticed that my npcs are not doing what their packages says. Usually when i test mods I will simply start the game up and I will coc to the locations where the npcs should travel to. I figure if the npcs are travelling there this is a problem. I have noticed that I have a problem with a few of the creatures I have added, I have made a bunch of caves for bears, wolves, sabercats, trolls, spiders, and Chaurus, It is my goal to have them spawn in their caves and travel to ranger camps. Usually I will have a static reference object such as a barrel of meat for them to sandbox around.. So far the bears, sabercats, and trolls leave their dens but not the wolves spiders or chaurus. At first I though it might be the autoload doors I used on their caves but if the bears, trolls and sabercats can use them then there must be another issue. I have also noticed that the bandit hunters do not leave their lodges. They are suppose to go to their reference which is a chest in the amazons caves and the Draconians prison. I want to simulate then rescuing the Draconian Prisoners before they are either consumes or used for sport in the Draconian arenas. I have also noticed that when I use Coc commands that Inquisitors will appear at the location despite the fact that they are suppose to be in their barracks at the time. When I look at the packages i noticed that they are all connected to the proper references.

Being honest I only skimmed, but I get the takeaway you have issues that you believe may be related to the number of NPCs. That can matter. If there is too much goin yeah NPCs will often basically stand there and wait there turn to get their AI reviewed

Aside from that, if you are worried if AI packages work at all, you obv would want to spawn a small number and make sure things are happening as you intend. Packages are very nice but can be counter-intuitive sometimes and not perform how you may think they should. Anyway just saw you didnt get a reply for a couple days. Good luck
