Arx Fatalis and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic

The graphics may be edgy, and blunt, but the storyline in these two games, where very good..

I still pull them out when I am bored, now and then..I did Arx the other day..

There is even scripting in Arx Fatalis I have yet to see in Oblivion even, like mixing ingredients, like taking, flour, adding water, then applying rolling pin, adding apples, to make apple pie, or not to make regular pie, or not apply rolling pin to get bread.. putting it over a flame and watching it rise, turn brown, and sizzle, same with fish, and chicken, watching them sizzle over the flame and then tun, and look cooked..beig able to use a fishing pole to fish..ect..

Real hunger was implemented int he game from the get go..water an essential for life was even incl.

Oblivion should have made water available not just alcoholic beverages, I have the intoxicated mod, so I can't drink to much booze..lol

But even that was implemented from the get go in Arx..getting drunk if you drank to much wine your world turned red, and you ran into things..this is all without mods..

The magic system was unique and took time to master, drawing magical runes inthe air, via mouse..and then releasing the spell was an challenging art form..

Your character would tell you when they were humngry..The tests in their were something also..

If not mind boggling sometimes..

Dark Messiah was a a game of wit as well a RP..The ability to kick a foe..was cool..and some of the weapons were neat, as well as the multiple story ending depending on your choices..at certain points..I armour was cool, and some of the swords..For linear games they were not bad..

I enjoyed these two games very much..still do sometimes..

I've myself not managed to play any of Arx Fatalis, but have heard good things of it.

Dark messiah, on the other hand - is a really great game. Screw the biased corrupt reviews, me and my mates loved that game . Did I mention I'm also a long term fan of the might and magic series? Almost everyone I know who enjoys RPGs has enjoyed at least might and magic VI, and the following two titles.

Even though I never much liked the change into first person hack and slash, it's a different experience from having a party of 4 and butchering all the monsters in the countryside =D

Aye I loved Dark Messiah..I agree..If you belong to Steam, if not Google it, the Free DL of game content, which you can then buy it from them cheaper..you can DL for free a demo of Arx Fatalis, on Steam, I think you'll like it.....get a walk through though, that game puzzles, are impossible at times, its a challenging game not just hack and slash.. and clues are not forthcoming it is good to have it there, in case one needs it, but despite the wee bit of choppy graphics on the people I think its a great story..give it a go..I am sure the demo will sell you..I bet..

Cheers mate

Wonderful game!

Even though I've cleared the crypt levels many times, and know what is going to happen, I still often have a mild coronary if the volume is set too high. The in-game ambience of Arx Fatalis is simply marvellous. Like Oblivion though, there is some weird continuity issues. You go to all the bother of rescuing Shany (you've got a big nose ... snigger ) and she still dissappears from the game. One can only summise she does, indeed, eventually grow into a princess. I often revisit this blast from the past.

Incidentally, if you look close, you'll see my avatar is from Might and Magic VIII .....

Ugh, thats happened to me more than once I usually edit one of them, and put what you put in it instead..

Aye what is with Shany disapearing..I thought the same thing..Aye a blast from the past indeed worth revisiting ..How long did it take you to figure out the runes puzzle, to get the shield..??

And a fine shield it is too .... Erm, I seldom used the thing. It took me the best part of 2 hours. It is too late you realise that you've seen some of those weird shapes on the floor of the large hall upper galleries. Even more annoying when you realise you need six rune stones - and you only appear to have five LOL. Ultimately there were not that many possibilities, positional or rotational, to open what I call the 'riddle door'. I'd arranged the runes in my backpack to match the floor positions.

When you've played games like Starship Titanic, or the Discworld series, you get used to the often bi-polar, multi-lateral, eleven dimensional, let's face it - deranged, thinking of the creators. And, if you drift back into reality as you play and remember there isn't room on the disk for anything that isn't relevant to the game, you can relatively quickly begin to rule out what is probable and what is not.

Incidentaly, as an example; if I went after the matching 'helm' the only way I could survive was with Negate Magic, did you ever succeed with a pure melee based character?

Hahahahh..Aye I know, They didn't give you many clues in that game either, its what i liked about it, you really had to be good with puzzles..Aye the first time I did that, realised I only has five and had to back track and find out where the bloody last one was...lol

Without magick..No feckin' way..Not when the Lich buggers come from all sides..after you pick up said 'helm'..You got to get your magic up..la....Like and aways remember to bring many bottles of health and mana with you also..lol...I thought it was quite ingenious the magic system, drawing Runes in the air, it took skill to learn....Aye Negate Magic, and..Harm..did it for me...

I loved that whole Dwarven level making your sword bit..outrunnig that bloody monster, always made me jump, even though I knew it would be there, right on my heels, while you fumble with your keys to open the bloody door..lol...no matter how many times..I did that..I hated that thing...

Aye..I still go back and play it when I get bored, with the hundredth new Oblivion character for someones just made a new awesome race I want to try out...

Arx is one of those games it will never for me anyway make it into the trash bin..

Have a nice day mate...
