Hannibal has been studying the soul Cairn to find information on it and the Ideal Masters since his death. He will come up to you and ask if the Mages Guild beat the King of Worms. Hannibal can be asked to be a follower in the Soul Cairn until you retrieve the Elder Scroll. If you are a Werewolf, Vampire, have the Necromancer's Amulet, or own Necromancy spells, he will not help you. After the quest if he went with you, He will ask that you publish a book about Magical Theories and the Soul Cairn he wrote to Tamriel. Afterwards he can offer to train you in all schools of magic and will be willing to teach you spells ranging from novice to expert in exchange for soul husks. You can talk to him and he will talk about how you remind him of a promising student (Hero of Kvatch) and other events from Oblivion. You could also brag that you are in the College of Winterhold and he would still help you but give you a talking about the dangers of Necromancy (stuff that happened in Oblivion). If you are the Archmage of Winterhold, Hannibal will be upset to hear that his friend Savos Aren has died saying that he was too focused on his studies and would often be unaware of things around him. He will then congratulate you on being the Archmage and will give you an unique Mage's Robe. You can come back in the game and tell him you became the Archmage and the get the Mage's Robe.
