andrew1234
OK, i have Oblivion running on my pc, with patches and mods, no problems.I tried to put it on my laptop, running vista. It installs and runs ok, but if i try and patch it to 12416(or the one like that, i have shivering isles) it says that the file is present but different and aborts the patch. I thought it might have been that i installed a mod first, so i uninstalled the game, re installed then tried to patch it. Same issue. So i figured, whatever, i can play with out the patch if mods work. When i put .esp's and their corresponding files into my Data folder, it doesnt detect them in the oblivion launcher to enable them. So, just wondering if anyone has any tips on what to do. Could it possibly be a vista issue?

If you have the GOTY edition, you may have to use the Oblivion patch, not the ShivIsles patch. error = "OLD file not found" means you have the wrong patch, you may have to double check the language version as well. MrCooper2006
Yeah you either have the wrong version/language patch OR the .exe has been modified, possibly by a mod, crack, or previous patch.
andrew1234
i dont have the goty edition. i will uninstall and make sure the patch is right.any thoughts on the mods though?
bben46
In vista, DO NOT install to the default location. make a new folder name it games or something and install there. Otherwise the vista security will prevent mods from working. They will install OK, appear in the data list, allow you to check them, then will not appear in the game. andrew1234
OK, so i got Oblivion working on the laptop with mods and such etc etc, thanks for the help with that. I returned the laptop(wasnt mine) and had this exact problem, but i had more mods installed.I now wanted to re-do my pc version and get into Oblivion again with better graphics then on my laptop. So, i reinstalled oblivion on my XP pc and installed oblivion, knights of the nine, shivering isles, fully patched it, installed FCOM and a ton of Enems mods. Now, when i play, it is fine, but will randomly freeze. Examples being: In the forest, casted a healing spell, froze. In the Anvil Fighters Guild, went to attack the dummy, Froze. I am at a loss as to what to do. (Assuming your processor, power supply, memory, and graphics card are all up to the job) If this is happening to you frequently, and not just occassionaly, then try yet another re-install but, this time, completely remove all traces of Oblivion and do a defrag. Yes, I know a defrag can take a few weeks short of 50 billion years to complete ( and I only have an 80 GIG drive) , but it's well worth it. I did it myself (reluctantly) about 3 weeks ago - I lose track of the days when I play Oblivion. If you know how, it's best to turn off virtual memory when you do a defrag - unless your Paging File is in a separate partition or on a different drive. Good luck anyway. EDIT: as an after thought, this helps too. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796/
andrew1234
it usually happens everytime i am playing, at varying times and instances. My computer is mostly up to snuff, 2gb RAM, 3 GHz cpu, 7600(i think, 512mb)Ugh, i really dont want to defrag but if it is my only choice, then i guess i will have to. Any other ideas before i head off and defrag?EDIT: I might just try simply disabling FCOM and running it that way, should have been the first thing i did! If it is FCOM, then i will just use other mods, no biggie.
catmagnet
I doubt FCOM is the culprit there, supposing it is properly installed which isn't exactly trivial. Kept your old ini? Any tweaks applied previousy? To me this sounds like a (re-)installation hickup.
