Aeryn333
No snakes, there are no snakes in Ireland, nor can they be legally imported in..Isnt the legend that Saint Patrick killed them or something? As an Anthroplogy major, this is up my alley here..so lets put thatmyth to an end..To sum it up...It seems that practically all forms of life were wiped out during the Ice Age. Since Ireland is an island surrounded by salt water, no great variety of land animals nor freshwater fishes have colonised it since it was uncovered by the melting of the glaciers. For example, Ireland has only about a third as many species of wild mammals as say your state ofIllinois and scarcely a tenth as many kinds of strictly freshwater fishes. A few others migrate up its rivers from the sea. Its bird life, only an hour's flight away from Britain, is not much different from other north European countries. Tis true..There are not only no snakes, but no native turtles. There are frogs, one salamander, called a newt, and one lizard that bears its young alive. Legend has it that St. Patrick drove all the snakes from Ireland. Sometime back in the fifth century he stood on a hill, the story goes, and used a staff to herd the slithering creatures into the sea, banishing them for eternity. That is a religious myth..representing driving of the Pagans out of Ireland...or so he thought..many stories are hidden symbology...Today being still a Catholic Nation, is probably why snakes are forbidden, whereas import of lizards are not..In the Druid or Old Ways the Mother Goddess has always been represented by a serpent..and the poor snake got a bad rap for it.. No!!. good Ol' Saint Patty..is a nice myth, one concealing what really happened..Yet most Irish will defend that religious myth to the death.. It's true, aside from zoos and pets, there are no snakes on the emerald isle. In fact, there never were any snakes in Ireland. This state of affairs probably has more to do with the vagaries of geography than any neat tricks performed by St. Patty.
varen
That is very interesting, thank you for the lengthy reply. It is a pity though, that you cant import them but imagine what they might do to the ecosystem if one escaped and bred with other escapees. Worshipping = Pantathians are a death cult bent on destroying Midkemia. Destroying Midkemia = Oh Shi- *Run away*

sseth672
When I can - I think I'll buy a boa constrictor, or something equally intimidating to scare off the bloody neighbours.Never had a reptile before; only cats and random parrots (both at the same time, the cat couldn't be bothered hunting it)
