Help with editing a mod form list to be compatible with other mods?

I have been trying to edit a form list for a perk from the mod Autumn Leaves so that it affects more weapons than those in the base game (i.e. mod and DLC weapons), but every time I try to load the edited version of the esp, the game won't load the main menu. I've tried moving it around in my load order but nothing seems to work. Is there something else I should be doing?

You don't want to try to directly edit the original ESM/ESP file (neither vanilla nor the "Falling Leaves" mod). You want to create your own "compatibility patch" with your modified form list replacing / overriding that of the one in the original ESP instead and load it after the ESP you are patching.
