Keyboard won't work

Yep, my keyboard is no longer functioning on Oblivion.

 

i am presuming that it has something to do with Logitech's auto-update, and the driver has changed.

 

Cos nothing else in Oblivion has....

 

Can anyone give me a suggested fix?

 

(and yes, I've already tried rolling back the driver - didn't work :( )

Hmm.. Try just a plug + play keyboard and see if that works. Then you'll know its definitly the drivers

I had a similar problem with my logitec. Solution? Thoroughly edumify it with my fists and replace it with a cheap and cheerful Genius keyboard - which remarkably still works.

Before you ditch your keyboard... do you have a gamepad attached to your machine (or any other gamecontroller for that matter)? Plug it out or disabe support in options and try again. But one thing I'll always second: those a thousand and one more extra key monsters are not worth the money, no matter what manufacturer. Likely to cause issues sooner or later and I've yet to see someone really using that funny knobs for any extend of time. In my experience cherry keyboards are of general high quality, but the one and only one that rules them all is the IBM Model M dating back to computing stoneage. Nearly indestructable and clickey keys(!), occasionally still seen on ebay. Nothing beats that tactile feedback. There is a company that still builds those (unicomp iirc) and there is also Das Keyboard... if you feel leet and are capable of blind typing.

Well, I've still got the cd for the original drivers that worked (probably better than the update, tbh!)

 

No, had nothing else attached (that I recall) - just the update had gone through.

Then roll back to the drivers from the CD. Keep us posted. Would be nice if you tell us which model exactly your using and the driver build that is causing the problems (if that indeed turns out to be the case), so others have a chance to find this and avoid similar issues.

Well, I did an uninstall of the logitech software, and reinstalled the stuff I had from disc (and turned off autoupdates, because it was only after this update that I had the problem - it was giving me an "can't find Direct OCR Error")

 

Unfortunately - reinstall has done nothing to help.

 

Logitech driver is from 23/01/07, version 3.30.0 And MS file version is 5.1.2600.5512. Using SetPoint 3.3a2

 

Model is Logitech HIDcompliant Media Keyboard 600. On XP SP3.

 

Now - should point out that it only seems to be Oblivion that doesn't read the keys, I can still CTRl-ALT-DEL, and SHIFT-TAB etc. Like I don't have a keyboard .ini for Oblivion anymore...

 

I'm a bit more lost now, so I'll await suggestions...

I'm with you. Including being lost... The only issue I encountered that even slightly resembles your problem only occurs after some extensive alt-tab-ing, but that usualy goes together with loosing any overlays like health bars and so on and is, imho, related to windows and oblivion disagreeing how correct window handling should be done. My work around in those cases is to keep process explorer (an extended taskmanager alternative from sysinternals, bought by m$ nowadays) running on a second display (which I need for my daily routine anyway) and instead of alt-tab-ing back to oblivion the normal way use the following series of commands: In process explorer rightclick on oblivion, choose window>restore, rightclick it again, choose window>bring to front. Usually the game becomes responsive again then. But I doubt that will work for your situation. So guesswork time, it seems. Ok, here's what I'd try if in your shoes: backup my oblvion.ini and delete it, see if the game fixes itself. Sign of desperation... but you got litte to loose by trying. I'm really a bit puzzled, only heard of lost keybard functionality in conjunction with gamepads. If it's any consolation: I'm typing this on my emergency-keyboard, a little illmuinated usb thing I usually just keep around to plug into servers, that need one so seldomly, that nobody remembers where the darn thing is now... worse than any notebook keyboard. Tomcat killed another one, I really shouldn't let my coffee mug standing there.... and this time it looks like the ps/2-port is gone too. Err... btt, HID in your keyboard's name stands for human interface device and is a device class also used for gaming stuff, I still thnk that some evil lurks in that direction. Maybe uninstall of any drivers related to such things is something to consider, too.

Hmmm - ok shall try your suggestions (wipe ini). where am I finding any HID stuff? I don't use joysticks or any other sort of gaming pads... just stock standard stuff - mouse and kb. Haven't even bothered to install the webcam.. And, as I said, all was fine til this update.

 

Btw - I sent an email to logitech's support... we shall see if they get back.

 

I'm thinking it left something there when I uninstalled, cos even the basic pnp detect after the uninstall failed to help the situation... :cry:

Edit: Nice try, no cigar... deleted .ini, no good. Should also point out, using numeric keypad (for my movement, of course) causes CTD! But a full one - no windows hanging about, or non-responses.

If you never installed any game controllers on that machine we can forget about HID. I agree, probably something was left behind. You weren't asking around here if you had got a recent syste restore, I guess? Doing this manually can amount to the digital equivalent of a witchhunt. Most likely places are windows\inf\, windows\system32\drivers (sorting by date could be helpfull there...) and of course the regsitry. Not to discourage you, but a reinstall could easily be less time consuming, dependiing on the way you set your system up. I follow a policy of separating system, third party applcations and user data by keeping each of them on their own partition as far as possible and a fourth one to store images from those three. A precaution that pays of in such cases. Well, probably not really helpfull for you now. If you decide to get a pile of wood and matches ready... well, it depends on what kind of installattion files we're dealing with. Inf can be opened with any editor, search for filenames and class IDs. Exe or msi will be not that easy. Monitoring the instalation with process explorer is feasible, but nothing I can teach you on the fly. Sorry, but I'd have a hard time doing so even in my native language. If you want to take the opportunity to learn some advanced troubleshoting technics by all means go ahead and make yourself familiar with process explorer. It's a free download frrom m$, even some videos on its usage there. Taking a look with a hex-editor could also work, after all you're only looking for paths, which will likely be just strings. Maybe the overall best option is... well, ditch the darn thing and get something simple and unobtrusive. Sorry, I may have been wasting your time here. A keyboard shouldn't need any additional drivers.
