Help with making .nif glow

Recommended Posts

Basically i had a friend make some lovely meshes for me with designs i made for those meshes. everything is ok except the glow, its not working at all, it shows in nifskope, but it doesn't show in construction set or oblivion, I tried even turning the glow files white and copying that pattern onto the texture file as the colour its supposed to be, the pattern shown in game but not in construction set and there was no glow in either of them, this .nif file is a "door" I haven't applied collision to it yet either, I have looked on google, but no look so far.

thank you for taking your time to read this.

Getting things to glow is actually rather easy in this game. It's the "Emissive" setting of the NiMaterial property which defines the glow. You can even make the NiTriShape/Strips glow in a specific color, but mostly you make it white and let the texture define the color instead. The Mesh will glow like a paper lantern.

The real fun comes from the so called glow "maps", DXT-1 files with the same name as the diffuse texture but with suffix "..._g.dds". These usually are greyscale intensity filters making only specific "parts" of a mesh glow. I think they can be colored even, but I doubt the color will have any effect. Black parts will block all light, white will let 100% through. Should be easy figuring out from there what greyscale you'll need for what intensity or effect.

thanks for the information i'll mess around with the things you have mentioned, i hope this works

EDIT: ok when I change the emmisive some other parts change with it even though in the .dds the area that glows (in nifskope) seem to change with the emmisive as well.

ANOTHER EDIT: the lighting of the mesh doesn't change with lighting all around it either in the construction set and the glow doesn't show either??? idk what i'm doing wrong.

I don't know if glow would show in the CS, or NifSkope for that matter, but you should definitely be seeing it inside the game, when no light shines onto the object. Sadly there's no discernible difference between being lighted up 100% or lighting up 100% visually. In bright light glowing objects don't glow.

But maybe something has gone wrong in the combination of the two. Could you perhaps provide some screenshots or the like, for us to see both your settings in the NIF and the results ingame?
