Game freezing at launch - I'm stumped

Update for this post:

  1. When you "change" the engine to be 4gig aware, your using an external program.
  2. That program is NOT part of the games structure.
  3. The registry values are hidden from Steam and GOG games systems.
  4. The registry retains the updated information BY that program.
  5. Not steam.
  6. Windows uses a Prefetch, a hyperlink to that executable name sake.
  7. Software cleaners, uninstaller programs will not touch Prefetch files.
  8. The Prefetch files do not belong to the games software nor installers programing.
  9. Windows 10 uses those hyperlinks on launch OR verifying valid updates to the executable.
  10. 4gig Enabler is not part of the game so it will override steam and GOG systems.
  11. To bypass the system you need to update the certificates that is downloaded and currently being blocked from installing.
  12. The steam verify-er will show 1 invalid or 1 file is in error.
  13. That's the engine it downloaded.
  14. Right click the engine, bring up it's properties
  15. if you just installed it and steam is running, you will get access to the systems utility for certification.
  16. If steam is NOT running and the game is operational, you will NOT be given access to these utilities.
  17. Do not tamper with the properties of the engine unless you know what your doing.

I am not going to teach every one how to navigate windows here, that's silly.

if a program refused to run, the utilities will be there in the files properties menu to install certificates other wise leave the software alone.

  • 1 month later...

I tried to re-import the certificate, but maybe i did it wrong?

full explanation required "what have you done "

there's a bit more involved than just what you think I did.

Do you remember the procedure I went through?

repeat that in exact sequence and the game should operate.

but if you moved/ installed, reinstalled or have it installed in the default location, are using tools that place the gaming data into UAC controlled areas then it will continue to take place.

I made sure Steam was running, went to the FalloutNV,exe (Which is not on my C drive), right clicked, properties, digital signatures, select cert, click details, view certificate, install certificate, choose current user, next, choose "automatically select the certificate store...", next, then finish.

What I was asking is this, other than what you just said, did you do anything else?

Did you reinstall something?

Did you install some kind of tool that changes the paths?

Did you follow through before this operation the preinstall of required software requirements?

Certifying the executable is only required IF steam finds that the executable is being refused to update by steam.

I did reinstall a couple mods. No tool that changes the path as far as I understand it. Yes, all prerequsiites are installed. It worked perfectly after you did your thing for at least a month, then i go to open it up and it stopped working again. But i had made no changes immediately before that.
