Convert character and follower to NPC

My current character has pretty much come to the end of the line and I'm thinking about starting a new character in a different role. But I would really like to preserve them in the new game by creating NPC version of my current character and his follower that I can include in the new game. I'd like to add them so they live in the same house (a mod addon house) and wander between there and Whiterun and perhaps could even become followers for my new character.

I've used the NPC Editor tool to create a custom Jenessa as my current follower but this is a modification to the stock character. In the new game it will obviously need to be a new character albeit with the same name.

Whats the best way to create new stand-alone NPC characters and is there a quick and simple way to convert a player character to NPC? And for 'wandering around', presumably I do this in the creation kit?

Thanks

Chris

If you want to make an NPC out of your current character, open the console and type "SPF ______" (where _______ is your character's name. This will create a file named ______.npc in your Skyrim directory. Then, if you open up the CK and create a new character, you can find a button labelled "Import" under the tab "Character Gen Parts", which will open up a window that you can use to select ______.npc. This will change the NPC's appearance to match your former character's.

Of course, you'll still need to add factions, voicetype, AI packages, and all that good stuff if you want to make him/her into a follower. There are plenty of great guides for that, both here on the Nexus and online, so I'm not going to go into it here. Hopefully I've answered your main question.

This works great, but it seems like I can achieve proportions in game that don't translate to Creation Kit, even when doing a direct import. Here's what happened:

  1. With my normal mods loaded, I fired up an early save (Level 1).
  2. I opened the character creation window and modified my character. The resulting face was quite beautiful.
  3. I exited the console and saved.
  4. I re-opened the console and exported the character with the spf command.
  5. I saved and exited the game.
  6. I loaded CK with Skyrim and Update ESMs active.
  7. I created a new actor.
  8. I imported my template character.
  9. I previewed the result in the render window. Meh.
  10. I added my Apachii hairs to the list of active ESMs.
  11. I switched my new creation to the Apachii hair I'd designated in game.
  12. I dragged her to Breezehome. (Still not looking too good.)
  13. I saved, exported face gen data, and saved again.
  14. I enabled the mod and re-started Skyrim.
  15. I loaded a later save (one with a character that actually owned Breezehome).
  16. The woman inside was a pale imitation of the one I'd made. Most noticeable was that the mouth was way too wide.

Are there just geometric limits to what CK will save versus what the game will save?
