Beth can increase its REVENUE by releasing a CS.

I have favored NWN2 versus Oblivion and I've kept up with every NWN2 release faithfully until I discovered mods and overhauls like CUO. I then bought the Beth Official plugins to go with the additional content modders developed. All of this made more readily available as a result of releasing a Construction Set.

Of course that also means official content is made for sale with the release of a CS. If nothing else it was a winning formula for Beth, why not re-apply the lessons?

I am almost certain we wont be getting a construction set but i don't think its beth's fault. The current financial climate makes it quite possible that they are not in a position to finance the release of a cs so the decision is in the hands of people who actually don't want the upward trend of user created content to continue. In its current form user created content isn't very profitable from the publishers point of view.

the only way they can see how to make it profitable is by marketing the games as a user generated game(i wont name them but i.e. the construction set IS the game on the shelf with the price tag), creating a buzz around it saying its revolutionary because you can do things we have been doing in modding communities for years.

The way they see it is that there IS a market for this kind of thing but its not being commercially exploited properly.

This could be bad news for beth. The last thing they want to do is alienate the core fan base of enthusiasts who they have attracted over the years. It could hurt them now because the precedents they have made in the past mean that it is now a reasonable consumer expectation that a cs will be released.

It should not be underestimated how bad that could be. I hear a lot of talk about how PC gamers are in the minority and that modders are a tiny fraction of that. The problem is that if the enthusiasts fall out of love with beth then it could become 'cool' to be a beth hater.

I guess im just pissed off. I think its outrageous the way they are treating the consumer in this case.

If the decision has not been made yet then it should have been.

I think the decision has been made but its bad news and they are just stringing us along to keep forum buzz up untill DLC release.

or am i synical?

hope im wrong.

Finances have nothing to do with the CS, except maybe the lack of sales they'd get for DLCs if they released the CS before their DLCs. That would be 110% Bethesda's fault. It's painfully obvious that is the reason they have not released the CS. At this point in time, I'm no longer looking at Bethesda to do the right thing but I am looking at the modders to make a 3rd party CS.

It might be in part down to finance. It takes developers time to make a releasable cs and that time has to be justified to the money men.

All im saying is that in the current financial climate its kind of hard to tell your bosses that you need to spend 4 months developing a cs that is completely unprofitable.
