Newbie + character customization (mods)

After playing WoW for 14 years i left and started playing ESO which i really like but after 3000+ hours i was looking for a new game to play so i chose Skyrim.

Ofcourse if i am going to invest a lot of time into the game i want my toon to look awesome , you get that right ? :) . i will happily spend hours in character customization.

I came to nexus after a friend told me about it , and was really impressed to see that there is a community of fans who put so much hard work, dedication and love into this project.

Could i make a suggestion? it would be awesome if you assembled a mod pack for the basic beginner, with the essential bug fixes, patches and the latest version of skse. add to that a starter pack for character customization so that a newbie can choose from some of the awesome examples i see listed in the mods. Then the newbie like me can push 1 button and presto it is all installed.

The really hard part as things stand is that there is a bewildering array of choices relying on different dependencies and 24 hours after having purchased the game and having downloaded over 30 mods i am struggling to get anything to work properly.

It took me over 9 hours to discover that if i change my resolution to 3440x1440 that the character customization screen doesn't work at all!!

So far I have only gotten enhanced character edit to work, though i am still stuck with the same standard presets. None of the other preset packs i have downloaded work at all and get error messages about the wrong version of skse even though i have the right one installed and my character customization screen is now fill with $$$ , ??? and various rubbish.

TBH the excitement i felt at the prospect of playing Skyrim has soured into one of exhausted frustration. what a shame....beautiful virgin gone to waste....

FWIW, the way I started playing and modding this game (last spring) was a twofold approach.

1) I watched a ton of MXR videos (it's what convinced me to purchase it, as I'm not a "gamer" per say... last game I played prior to skyrim was FFXI and I dropped that in ~2008-9)

2) the most endorsed all time tab https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/trendingalltime/

well... three fold...

3) I also went laboriously through the 'browse all mods' tab and delved further into mods that peaked my interest from the short blurbs offered there.

I know this isn't a great deal of help, but it's how I got to my present load of ~230 or so mods. (many of which, btw are simply installed as requirements for other mods) ... and the support forums can be a bit sparse on content, so who knows, it might be the only reply you get

edit: ps> if you review the mods for the past few weeks, there *is one entry that's a guide for newbies. Can't cite the link but a bit of footwork on your part will reveal it to you. see https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/

and scan the entries page by page. it's in chronological order afaik from most recent back.

Welcome to Skyrim modding!

Mod Packs might sound like a good solution at first, but in fact they aren't. Here on the Nexus they aren't allowed for intellectual property and copyright reasons. There's also a practical reason not to use mod packs: It is very difficult to always keep track of all the mods included in a pack and update them. So mod packs would tend to distribute outdated versions of mods, which could lead to further trouble... In fact, that's what happens in a lot of other games, where mod packs are more common than in Skyrim modding...

So, Skyrim modding basically means "choose for yourself".

Some general thoughts first:

1. There are hardly any "must have" mods. The only things you probably should install are SKSE, SkyUI, SKSE Engine fixes and the Unofficial Patch. Everything else is more or less optional. Choose what you like/need. And take it slow for the beginning. Skyrim SE is even playable without any mods at all...

2. For Character Creation, I'd recommend Racemenu instead of ECE. IMHO more versatile and easier to use.

I understand that the amount of mods might be overwhelming at first. Therefore I'd suggest using a modding guide.

The SEPTIM guide is a bit outdated, but in general still very helpful: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/2846

Contrary to the guide, I'd recommend using Vortex (available here form the Nexus) as your mod manager though. Apart from that, the guide is still fine.

OFC, you don't need to follow the guide step by step. If you don't need or don't like something, skip it. You can use modding guides also as some kind of "catalogue" to see some options.

Good luck on your journey into Skyrim!

Thanks for the replies :)

Well its been a couple of days and in the interim i have learnt a lot !

Newbie mistakes i made

- not realizing that the version of skyrim i have is really really important - skyrim se and ledgendary and vr are totally different beasts with different patches. So to the other newbies make sure you select your version before you start looking for mods ! :)

- download the right SKSE for your version

- Pick and stick with one set of mods for your character, I chose CBBE as it seems the be the most popular dependency that other mods build on. only use 1 UI mod!!

- Use the default screen resolutions to create your character and change it afterwards ...

- Use the widescreen mod to fix your UI mod so it scales properly. it gives a proper 21:9 aspect.

- DO NOT remap your left mouse button! this broke my fast travel option a couple of times before i woke up to it... omg i reinstalled twice !. it also fubars character creation !!

To all the modders out there you have my heartfelt thanks for all the work you have put in. I find myself enjoying the game in a way i have not in such a loong time , not since the days of Baldur's Gate and Bard's tale have i enjoyed such immersion. I have been playing MMO's for so long and there is always a underlying drive to get things done and be productive. none of that in Skyrim ... i kick back and take it all in , frequently stopping to simply listen in on a conversation between npc's . no one does a quest like bethesda. the conversations and immersion are unrivaled... shame the did not have the same level of talent in their map and menu depts.

I wish i could post some pics of my girl who is a knockout dark elf mage wearing Celes Mercy outfit , omg babe!

So thanks to the creators of CBBE , RaceMenu ,Celes , KSE vanilla replacer, Pfuscher texture packs, The ravens breezehome , and Carriage + ferry overhaul.

/waves bye for now
