How can I apply a retexture to an NPC?

Hello everyone, I'm trying to complete this companion mod but I'm currently stuck.

Here's what I've done so far:

I've extracted my desired skin texture for a Mister Gutsy model from the Fallout - Textures2.bsa (or Textures1) file with FOMM. Then I took that texture file into Photoshop where I made some custom modifications and saved it in the correct format. Now, I'm trying to take my retextured DDS file and apply it to my Mister Gutsy in the GECK, but I don't know on what to do or where to go to apply my customized texture. This is where I've been stuck for the past few days...

Any help or advice will be appreciated. Thank you. =]

You'v got a least two options. One is the way just about everyone does it and involves firing up nifskope, loading your mister gutsy model in (you'll have to extract it from the FONV BSA ) and changing the texture paths. Then naming it something unique. Then go into it' model tab and choose hte new model. It can be a little bit of a pain if you'v never done it before.

The other way is by applying a new texture set. That also saves a few kb's, since you don't have a new model. Lot of tutorials, here is one on

I've tried the youtube tutorial retexture method but that only works for weapons and armor. However, for the past few days, I've playing with NifSkope and managed to get the texture on my mister gutsy model. It worked until I loaded into the GECK and now my mister Gutsy is slightly glowing orange for some reason? What did I do wrong?

Glowing orange? Huhh, not something I'v really run across in a re-texture. I wonder if you replaced the glowmap texture?

so under a gutsy's texture you have;

textures\creatures\mistergutsy\MisterGutsy.dds this is the texture file you wan't to replace ie textures\creatures\mistergutsy\MyMisterGutsyTXT.dds

Leave the these other two texture below alone;

textures\creatures\mistergutsy\MisterGutsy_n.dds

textures\creatures\misterhandy\MrHandy01_g.dds

one is the normal map, hte other the glow map (for the bright/glowing bits, like the eye).

If that doesn't help, PM me and I'll send you my email address, email me the gutsy nif you saved and the new texture and I can look at it (or place it on a file sharing service like mediafire).

It also occured to me that when I typed " Then naming it something unique. Then go into it' model tab and choose hte new model." I could have been clearer. Something along the lines of "once you'v changed the texture path, select save as in nifskope and give the model a new name" otherwise you may save it as mistergutsy.nif and that would replace the model for all mr gutsys.

You were completely right! The file path was incorrect on the NifSkope file... Even telling me on what I how to retexture my companions helped me a lot. Thank you so much on helping me on this, devinpatterson! =]

Now I can continue on working on the rest of my companion mod... =D

Note: You will be credited on helping me with this problem... =]
