JanusForbeare
The ads on the Nexus are completely ridiculous ("BEST combat lightsabers!" "Comparative pricing on bulletproof vests" "You deserve a Roman orgy!") but they don't usually bother me. This is an amazing resource, offering an unrivalled database of mods for a variety of games at no cost to the user, so I'm more than willing to put up with them. However, I saw one today that worried me a little: an ad for a website called GW4Gold.com, that offers, in standard gold farmer chinglish "Gold fastest & safest" for GW2. Now I know for a fact that ArenaNet has a strict policy against 3rd parties selling and buying gold. In many countries there is growing concern about various aspects of the practice, from the potential for tax evasion, to the extremely low wages paid to the employees of the companies, to the detrimental effects on the games themselves. Legally speaking, it's a bit of grey area - the practice itself is not illegal, but the way many of these businesses operate is (usually for the reasons mentioned above). Personally, I haven't played MMORPGs for years, so I am not directly affected by these businesses, and they're providing the Nexus - something I do use - with the revenue to continue operating. Technically, I suppose I should be for the idea. However, I can't help feeling that there's something wrong with the concept of these guys being given the opportunity for legitimate advertisement, particularly on a site this popular. So I wanted to ask you all - what's your opinion of this? Please note, I am not saying - or asking any of you - what the Nexus should or shouldn't do. That is, obviously, up to the staff. However, I don't think there's anything wrong with voicing our opinions on a matter so obviously fraught with moral ambiguity.
Thandal
The Nexus uses a third-party provider to place the adverts. The site does not select them, nor does it exercise editorial control over them. Dark0ne can, (and does) alert the provider when an inappropriate advert appears, but someone (you, the membership) must alert him first. With your help, he's been particularly successful in getting some of the "screaming" ones removed from the rotations. Please try to grab a screenshot whenever you see something like that. Otherwise, it's almost impossible to identify the offender. (Different regions of the world see different content based on the client's IP address, so even the date/time and specifc Nexus site where you saw the advert isn't enough...) Thanks! JanusForbeare
Noted, and thank you and Dark0ne for acting on this! I will certainly take screenshots if I see anything similar in the future. Oh, and feel free to close this topic, since the issue has been resolved. Thanks again. Ogramirad
Well I am All In Favor of a Capitalistic Free Market System, and I could be wrong about this part, but I don't think there will be that many Gold buyers clicking the link from this site to go and do so. If there are such people that are able to buy Gold that frequent this site, I would think that they have already made arrangement's to do so someplace else. So with that in mind, I say take the Gold Advertisers Money by the bucket load and run, with out a doubt.. lol ;) ;D
