Best overall magic character for a newby

I too would advise a Breton, the 50% resistance to any magic thrown to you is great.

I would advise not to install any mod so early, just play a bit, notice what you do find boring, and look for some small mod to correct it, you will find it for sure and enjoy mods much more.

As for skills I would personally advise Destruction (of course), Restoration, Alchemy, one weapon (I would suggest Blade), one armor (I love Heavy). For the remaining skill it's up to you, but I would avoid Conuration, Alteration and Illusion, they rank up so fast that you will power-level without even noticing. And power-leveling is not good for your health in vanilla Oblivion, not at all.

Choose Endurance as a favorite attribute, health is very important.

As for sign, the Mage is the safest bet, better ignore the Atronach and the Apprentice, they have too many drawbacks. You could also consider the Fighter if you want to mix in some combat.

BTW, I find it difficult to play as a pure armorless mage in vanilla game, think about mixing some "real" combat in, combat is funny and it improves your Endurance when you use Block skill. That's also why I prefer Heavy Armor to Light, because it helps your Endurance.

But the most important thing is HAVE FUN!

That is so not true. Atronach is actually the single best mage birthsign. Sure, it does suck a bit starting out but work towards the Arcane University ASAP and all you gotta do is enchant some armor with Spell Absorb for 50% on armor and BAM, invulnerability to all spells (so you actually WANT to get hit by spells) and you get magicka back!

But for a starter, then yes it does have too many drawbacks until you learn a bit more. :) But Atronach in the hands of someone who's been playing for even a -little- bit is the most powerful mage birthsign in the game (save for some modded cheat ones.)

Absolutely agree, but that is not what the OP is asking.

Only on your 2nd or 3rd game you can go for it.

I actually chose Atronach on my first game. Originally I did it for the challenge of having to rely on Potions (and later I found out about Welkynd Stones!) and actually stumbled upon the Spell Absorption enchanting myself. So it's possible.

Now to answer the question more specifically in me own way these are what I would personally choose for skills:

Endurance

Willpower

Destruction

Heavy Armor

Restoration

Alchemy

Illusion

Alteration

And whatever else for the last

You've been dary for your first game, congratulations!

But I still would suggest the OP a simpler birthsign to start off with.

Cheers!

I'm back into Oblivion after a hiatus with GuildWars, and I agree that a Sorcerer makes a great mage character. The Heavy Armor helps in 2 ways: 1) defense (obviously); and 2) Endurance, which means more Health as you level up!

Breton for the race, for the +50 MP and a 50% Magic resistance. (Does being a High Elf really pay off given the vulnerability to magicka?)

Birth Sign: The Lady or The Mage. The former helps with Endurance, and better magicka regeneration; the latter with an additional +50 MP.

Conjuration: for your weapons. You're going to improve in these skills at some point anyway as a lot of enemies are melee. Why lug around a heavy axe/sword/mace when you can simply summon one?

I added the Supreme Magicka mod, and really enjoy playing a magic-primary character now! (It's also pretty cool for an Assassin-type mage.)

Have fun! Oblivion is a very cool game, especially to customize!
