BadlyDrawnRhino
This is one of those games where you aren't supposed to follow the main storyline to enjoy it...It's unfortunate that it's not better designed to protect new players from doing that.Considering the main storyline is the last thing you'll remember once you finish the game, that's not really a very good design choice. I thoroughly enjoyed the game, exploring and doing side quests. Sure, it was way too easy, and the followers were incredibly annoying (why couldn't they just shut up? Or not kamikaze through mutants I was trying to sneak up on?), but overall I was enjoying it. But then I reached the level cap, and discovered that there wasn't really any point to exploring or doing side-quests because the xp gain was the only decent reward for doing it. It was fun for awhile afterwards, but my enjoyment quickly waned. So I decided I'd just finish the game, go back and play from the start with an xp cap removal mod, and possibly something to make the game more challenging. That was a big mistake. I went through, and was mildly intrigued when I had to go into Vault 87 to get the GECK. I do wish it didn't give me directions on exactly how to get in (the one huge downfall of quest markers telling you where to go is that it takes all the mystery out of a game), but it was still fun. Then I got captured by the Enclave and thought "Well, this should be good. Sneaking through the Enclave base, freeing my incredibly annoying ghoul friend and the dog." Unfortunately, I realised shortly after that I didn't really have to sneak, as I could two-shot kill every single soldier in the base. Not to mention that I got a whole army of robots to protect me when I was finally on my way out after speaking to the president. I also never did find my companions. Presumably Dogmeat would have been at Vault 101 if I'd ever bothered to go back there. No idea where Charon would have got to. This was the point where I started to get worried. The talk with the president was terribly badly written (the dialogue throughout the entire game had been pretty mediocre, but it got significantly worse as the storyline progressed). I basically just walked out of the Enclave base. I did aid the robots in killing some of the Enclave, but after a couple of rooms I just got a bit bored, and just strolled out. Went back to the Brotherhood, and the game just completely fell apart for me. I just cannot fathom why Bethesda decided that it was a good idea to give me a giant robot as a companion for the last portion of the game. As if the game wasn't easy enough already... Anyway, I got to Project Purity, and decided to let the colonel go because I was playing a good character (I am aware that no karma loss would have been incurred, but mercy is one of the traits of a good person, right?) and discovered that I had just spent the last half hour not having to do anything except avoid getting stepped on by a giant robot (incidentally I did actually try to get stepped on, and it just pushed me out of the way...) just to push in some buttons and keel over and die. Pretty much the most anticlimactic ending I have ever sat through, except perhaps the ending for Signs, where the climax of the plot is a news report on the radio that the aliens have gotten up and left. Now, like I said, I really did enjoy the game. But I am now torn. I did want to go back and play as an evil character, but now that I know that I will inevitably be disappointed by the end of the game, and also that there is a distinct lack of evil choices throughout the last storyline quests, I'm not sure I could really bring myself to play through again. I'll be keeping a very close eye on the mods that people are working on, to see if one crops up that will allow me to play through and actually enjoy the storyline (a good start would be removing Liberty Prime. Maybe have him break as soon as they set him down outside of the Citadel. That might actually make it feel like it's a fight for survival to get to Project Purity, as opposed to a walk in the park with my big hunking robot. Soon as the GECK is released, I'll be looking into that possibility, or at least trying to find a more experienced modder to do it for me...) Well, I think that is enough of a rant for one early morning, so I'll leave it at that. I'm truly sorry for anyone who actually took the time to read through my post, but not as sorry as I am for anyone who spent the time on Fallout 3 and had it turn around and deficate on their faces as much as it did mine.
