Followers and outdoor areas of player homes

Disclaimer, Not a rant, nor a call of demand, just some thoughts to open a discussion about something that's been picking my brain for a while...

With no intended disrespect to authors, I've noticed something about many of the player homes. Followers can be assigned to them as homes (using various managers like AFT, or via other means), but they don't seem to ever use the outdoor areas unless they're (effectively) commanded to do so on an ad-hoc basis.

When I enter a home in which followers have been assigned but are dismissed or in "relax" mode, I find them doing things, from the simple (sleeping, sitting somewhere) to stirring a pot or hammering away on the anvil or using some other tool or table. In some, like the underground bathouse, they use the various indoor pools, sauna, bathrooms, etc. But not outside. Nor the Hearthfire homes (generally speaking that is...my bard did use the pool addon for lakeview manor once), nor the porch or gardens for Waterview, nor any of the outside or "basement" features at Peregrine. Bathing Beauties *does have some of what I'm talking about, in that the NPCs involved made routine use of both the indoor and outdoor elements, but in most homes I see nothing outside of the walls.

Is there something I'm missing, or is this just the way it is? Are there any not-so-prominent mods (or just mods I've missed) that increase their scope to include the outdoor areas so it didn't so... forced to see them using the pool or garden or just hanging out outside the inside?

If it requires more than run-of-the-mills skills to make happen (if possible that is), can you point me to resources that help me to learn the principles and build the necessary skillset?

edit: tweaked wording

You can use the "My home is your home" mod for assign a npc to "work or relax" in "this part of the area" during a time of the day. But... it will be always even with rain or snowblizzards.

Exactly this. BTW, this isn't something mod authors could change. Especially when building larger structures, you need to use load doors at some point. Otherwise you'll run into performance issues. There are some "world space" homes, but they usually take a heavy toll on engine ressources. So the "open world" approach has its limits...

Unfortunately, by default followers won't leave the cell they're currently in unless they are explicitely told to do so (that's exactly what MHIYH does). While this behaviour might be immersion breaking at times, it also has its benefits. Saves time looking for your followers...
