Alternate Soldier Voices

With all due respect to the USA... 9 different male USA-english voices for 20 different countries of people = KAK!

Especially as many of us non-american cant really pick the difference between most of those 9 male and 6 female voices anyway!

There are, of course, the various localised versions of the game, Polish, German etc etc which will have the Soldier Voices in those local languages. Even this would be a BIG step forward if we could repalce 8 of the 9 American male and 5 of the 6 American female voices with "other languages. Sure, they wont be speaking English, but, heck, that's better than vanilla!

------------

In theory can I "just" replace the female and male voice banks in C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\XCom-Enemy-Unknown\XComGame\CookedPCConsole with the "foreign" copies of those voices banks?

e.g. replace FemaleVoice6_Bank1_SF_LOC_INT.upk with the equivalent file (renamed) from the (f.ex) Polish game version? (This is the file with the actual sound files in it (.ogg))

Then leaving the FemaleVoice6_Bank1_SF.upk as it is (as this is the file that tells the engine what part of FemaleVoice6_Bank1_SF_LOC_INT.upk to actually play)....?

Help, guidance, thoughts all appreciated.

-----------------

The big shame is there's no way to do South-African, Australian, Canadian, Scots, British (tc) english, without getting new voice acting for all of the 14 banks per voice....then relating them all to the individual actions...

but that's for another day.

-----------------

Notes:

The sound files are .ogg packed up as .upk....

you can use the standard un-packer on the .upk file (gildor's) then use oggextract to get the .ogg files out form the upk.

I haven't found a system for reliably unpacking the .ogg files with their original filenames though.

I do agree that there should be more uniqueness in the voices. There are a ton of other countries in this game and they need to be represented in their voices.

I understand why the developers didn't due this due to budget but... don't they have to translate these voices anyways? Why not add some of those voices into each different version of the game.

sounds nice. Did you actually try the rename-replace thing ? sounds like a good place to start. I will look into it when I get home.

I dont have any localised voice files to work with atm, Im going o put a request out for some later today.

Usually you just need to change the language setting in steam under properties and I think it replaces the English voices with the new language ones. I am using a German retail game and have it set to English and everything is in English for me. So I think you just need to go through all the language versions, copying what you need from each one before merging them into a "mixed" version.

edit: just checked, changing the language option downloads an extra folder containing the new language voices into the CookedPCConsole folder

OK, files downloaded and unpacked.

The non-english sound files have different identifier's within them as shown here:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8335/8082393998_db2fcffd7e_o.jpg

So currently, swapping in the French voice file does nothing because of the different ObjectReferencer number. (game does not crash, it simply fails to generate that soldier voice within the game)

(Note, when changing the voice on the soldier in the barracks there is NO CHANGE in the voice played regardless of changing, or removing, these voice banks.)

However all the composite .ogg sound files share the same naming system in every voice-bank... so the theory of swapping them over should work.

Unfortunately I am stuck at this point as I do not know how to change those numbers within the UPK....

or whether the game would use the unpacked files if they were all extracted.

Modders' technical help required at this point.
