Upgrading mods

Getting several yellow signs now in my NMM window, and need to upgrade some mods. What, is the generally recognized method by the community?

Download in NMM, you get two version in your window for NMM. Do you simply click on 'active mod', then overwrite (I'm assuming you click on yes when asked) or do you click on 'no'

Do you then have to delete the old mod?

Never upgraded, sorry for being mod noob.

You seem to have it pretty much right. If you're updating with NMM, hit "yes" when it asks you to overwrite, and that's generally all you have to do. If the mod's page doesn't have any special updating instructions then you don't have to delete anything, NMM will just overwrite old files with new ones and you'll be ready to use it as soon as it's done.

If you click on "no" then you will have both the old and new versions of the mod, except that the new version won't necessarily work. The only time you should do that is when it asks if you want to overwrite when it's not an update - some series of mods with similar names, like the SkyRealism mods, are mistakenly considered to all be different versions of the same mod and it will ask you that. Choosing 'no' in that case will let you install the mods like normal.

Ok so I...

Downloaded new version of mod - two mod versions in list.

Uninstalled old mod.

Installed new mod

Deleted old mod

I still get the message 'this save relies on objects that aren't here any more'

Not looking good. If I bork this one up, this is the last time I play skyrim, it's coming off.
