Dosetsu
I recently reinstalled Oblivion after having not played it for awhile. I added some mods and fried the game up normally. At a random time (Five minutes or less usually) my interface would freeze up on me. The game itself didn't entirely freeze, it was just that I was unable to interact with the game. My cursor would not move, moving commands, tab, space bar nothing. Still if I was being attacked by something it would continue to attack me as normal, or if NPC's were talking or moving they would do what they had been doing and move on. Since I have been freezing up and having to alt+ctrl+del to end the game, I have not made it past the newbie area to test it much further. Here are some specifics: My computer uses Windows XP 3 Gigs of RAM, dual core processor E6550 @ 2.33 GHz, 2.33GHz. The drive I installed Oblivion on is my C: drive and has 160 GHz, 40 of which are free. I have a Nvidia 8600... Can't think of any other specs that would be critical as far as that. What I've tried already with the software: I used the uninstall guide on these boards to remove everything and tried the game with a variety of different mods (Using OMOD) to try and isolate which mod it might be causing the trouble. I have also tried running the game vanilla with just Oblivion, Shivering Isles and the Shivering Isle official patch. Still the same results, freezing up and seemly random times. I also have several of the downloadable content patches such as Knights of the Nine and the horse armor pack. My copies of Oblivion and Shivering Isle are on CD, not downloaded or anything. I am going to try a few more things, like loading it without Shivering isle and without the patch to see if that helps, but any advice would be appreciated. I browsed through about 10 pages back of messages here looking for something like this, but nothing sounded like the problem I am having. If I just didn't go back far enough to find a well known problem, then sorry for spamming the board. Thanks
dezdimona
when you un-installed you removed all the old files. I mean phyically looked because un-install does not remove all the old files. Also install the unofficial patch and make it first in your mod load order
Dosetsu
I figured it out (I think), so far it seems to be working once again. made it through the newbie zone and to the nearest Inn without crashing. The link to properly uninstall Oblivion actually mentioned this problem, but the solution took a bit more digging. The link (from a Technical support sticky on this forum, is: http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums/index.ph...p;#entry8103714 That basically is just a link BACK to this forum, and the faq there says that it had been a problem for a long time now, and there is no real good fix. Basically the issue I had was that I reinstalled Oblivion on a system that has a lot of other crap on it. The music (,mp3) files where having conflicts on which software should be used to play them, that was what was crashing me. I checked all my sound files in oblivion/data, then used the Windows Media Player and tried (with it's ass backwards menu system) to make that my default player for MP3. Then I downloaded k-kite codex to help manage it a bit better. Like I said, it worked but it was pretty obscure. The post I found from this board was from 2006, and it never came up with a solid solution that I saw. Some of the things it suggested did work for me, but I was starting to worry that it was going to to a full XP reinstall to get Oblivion to behave. Thank you for responding, and hopefully it is smooth saling from here.
