Accessing mesh files or at least topology images

I'm hoping this is the right place forum.

After seeing the rapier mod I started working on a few basic new models for items I think should be in the game. However after extracting the meshes bsa i found myself unable to access the nif files with nifscope. darn.

So can anyone provide me with a couple of .obj's of weapons or at least some wireframes/topologies so I have an idea of polycount?

Failing that I guess I'll just have to pickup the weapon in-game and start counting

Items planned (Please don't suggest anything yet)

-Binoculars

-.223

-Better ripper (Flamberge style :) )

-.50 Deagle

There is a new development version of NIFSkope available which includes support for reading from Fallout 3's .nif files, although writing is still sketchy from what I hear. I've messed around with it a bit myself, as I'm working on a little project to get the various people-related meshes and textures working in SI's Facegen software for viewing/editing and all that. Anyway, the new version of NIFSkope can be found here: http://niftools.sourceforge.net/forum/view...?f=4&t=1967.

You might also want to take a look at the ever-expanding thread on the Bethesda forums for Fallout 3 modding if you haven't already. I haven't read through all of it yet myself, but there's a lot of interesting stuff there: http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=894103.

I hope that helps you out.

The new NIFSkope will allow you to use the resource files from Fallout 3 unpacked, it's under File -> Resource Files. From there, just go find the mesh and texture .bsa files in your install directory and you're set. Well, you also have to add in the texture folder locations (or press the automatic button) in the Render -> Settings menu.

Should you want to extract files for any reason, though (I have all of the archives extracted now for convenience and it's nice to be able to play the old-timey radio songs when I'm not in-game) you can use the new Fallout 3 Archive Utility by ScripterRon to get specific files or entire archives: http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34. It's really handy, since there's none of the mucking around with a hex editor like BSA Commander required if you wanted to get at the FO3 data.

Oh, and don't worry about being a newbie at this. No one is an expert in how Bethesda made this game yet besides Bethesda, though some folks do have a lot of good insight from their Oblivion days and from poking around a lot. :D Hell, I'm mostly a modding newb, too. I've just poked around at game data files in a few places before.

Anyway, hopefully that'll help you out.
