Hey everyone. I get an instant CTD in Oblivion, and it's the oddest thing. I'm making a new char, no previous saves, and I can make the facegen, and everything runs smoothly, but once I finish and I actually enter the cell, I get an instant CTD. My guess is it's a script initialization issue. Right before I get the CTD, the weapon HUD (see, bare fist) is visable for .1 second, then the CTD. I've got all my info here, and also realize that I've got everything maxed out but resolution, which is at 1658x1050, or some such nonsense. Too lazy to put my Oblivion disc in and check. :P

 

I have my load order here for you all, too. I use BOSS, and I have OBMM, and Bash, as per needed. I'm not sure what's going on here, and I really would appreciate all your guys' (and ladies') help! Thanks. :)

Bump, but not for nothing.

 

Turns out I forgot COBOL_Glue.

 

I added it in, reran BOSS, rebuilt Bash file, but still get the same persistent crash. I would uninstall, but I'd really rather not as I just reinstalled yesterday, and this is what I was greeted with. I have OBSE_15a, if that makes a different. Also, if needed, I'll post my .ini.

First, lets try the easy fixes. When you start are you starting using the OBSE launcher?

Have you updated to the latest patch?

 

Now, using OBMM, disable EVERY mod. it will leave only the Oblivion.esm checked because it is needed for the game to run.

If it works, then you have a mod problem, start putting them back until you see the problem again, in small groups, not all at once.

 

If it still crashes, leave the mods disabled. Try lowering ALL video settings to their minimum, turn off everything in the settings that can be turned off.

If it runs, then start by raising the video settings, not all the way, but about half way.

 

If it still crashes, you will need to reinstall. Here is my recommended reinstall procedure, please follow it exactly or it might not work - especially the part about cleaning your registry, rebooting where it tells you to and defraging when it tells you to (before you reinstall and after cleaning the registry.)

 

 

When you uninstall Oblivion it doesn't really uninstall everything.

 

It does not remove your mods, save games or Oblivion.ini. It also does not remove helper programs such as OBSE, OBMM, Wrye Bash, The construction set or any other programs you have installed in the \Oblivion folder or the save game folder. I recommend that you go ahead and delete them, then re download and install the latest version of them again later. After you have verified that the game works.

 

Then when you start adding mods before you have started the game, some things may not get initialized properly. Here is my recommended procedure for uninstalling and reinstalling.

 

I would appreciate any feedback on this as it is something I expect to post often and I hate to give bogus or useless information.

 

Uninstalling Oblivion

 

My instructions assume you are using Windows XP and have installed Oblivion into the default location. If you are using Vista or Linux, the file locations may be different, however, the procedure will be the same.

 

For a full reinstall, first you can try to preserve your mods and save games. I recommend that you save them in a new folder with a new name. Create the new folder in C:\Program files\Bethesda Softewrks. Name it Old Files. So it will be C:\Program Files\Bethesda softworks\Old files.

 

Then copy the data folder where your mods are to the new folder - do not erase them, copy them. And in the new folder, rename the \data folder to \olddata. Then copy and rename the folder that has your saved games and Oblivion.ini, C:\documents and settings\your user name\my documents\My Games\oblivion to something like \My games\Old Oblivion - this saves your saved games and the oblivion.ini file.

 

Then, using the original CD, NOT the Launcher on your Hard drive. Select uninstall.

 

After it completes the uninstall, reboot your computer - this is important as it allows Windows to remove some references to the original Oblivion.

 

This would be the time to erase all of the helper programs you have in the \Oblivion folder. Such as OBMM, OBSE and some others. The simplest way is to erase the folder completely. The new install will re create the folder for you along with a fresh oblivion.ini and when you start the game and make a save, a new save folder and new \data folder.

 

This would also be a good time to do a file clean up and defragment your hard drive.

 

If you are worried about the registry entries that were left behind. There are several good programs for removing left behind entries. The one I use is ccleaner. Be sure to reboot before using it, and again after. It is available here: http://majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

 

 

Now to Reinstall.

 

Again using the original CD, install Oblivion.

 

Special instructions for Vista only: Do not install to the default location - make a new folder such as C:\Games and install there. That way you will not be bothered by the problems caused by the Vista UAC security not allowing mods to work.

 

Before adding any mods, patches, helper programs, Shivering Isles or anything else, start the game and make a save. This initializes some stuff that needs to be initialized.

 

If you are using the Game of the Year version of Oblivion you should not need any patches, skip the patching part.

 

Now, If you DO NOT use Shivering Isles, patch the game using ONLY the latest Oblivion patch. All of the stuff from the earlier patches is included.

 

Be sure you use the proper language patch. If you use the wrong one it may work, but with a strange mixture of languages. (Germanglish?) Or it may crash.

 

NOTE: there are two English Patches UK & US and they are different. (Some people actually think we speak the same language) Use the one that matches your original disk.

 

If you use Shivering Isles, Install it now. DO NOT install the Oblivion patch. Install Shivering Isles, then ONLY the latest Shivering Isles patch. All of the updates for Oblivion are included. There is only one Shivering Isles patch for both US & UK English

 

Now, again start the game and make a save. Test to be sure everything is working right (No purple objects or yellow blocks)

 

Before adding any mods, back up both your \data folder and the save game folder. Copy them, don't move or rename them, to a different folder - such as \Bethesda\Clean Oblivion\data and \Bethesda\clean Oblivion\saves. Note that this is a different folder than the one used for your old data and saves.

 

Note, Your Oblivion.ini file is in the same folder, but separate from, the save game folder.

 

Now, if you want to try to run with your old mods, first rename the original folders. The \data folder to \newdata and the \oldata back to \data. this restores all of your mods. You should now have 2 data folders \data, and \newdata in your \oblivion folder

 

To restore your original saves and ini file, rename the new My Games\Oblivion to something like \New Oblivion. and the \Old oblivion to \oblivion - this restores all of your saved games and your original Oblivion.ini file.

 

DO NOT erase the files you renamed. These are your backup files in case the original mods do not work or give you the same problem.

 

If you have the same problem, it is most likely caused by a mod. However, you now have a clean install to fall back on. You can rename the files back to what they were and be back to your clean install without having to reinstall again.

 

Sounds like lots of work, but you will have a clean install and a back up clean install when you are finished.

General Load-Order Guidelines

 

 

Here are the guidelines that I adhere to, personally.

 

~ Unofficial Oblivon Patch should always be first on the list. The fixes are great, but most aren't essential, so if a mod overwrites them its not a big deal, and the fixes have the potential for screwing up other mods if loaded later.

 

~ Offical Content (DLC's) should be loaded last, until you complete all quests associated with them (that includes buying all furniture for the houses and whatnot). Once they're complete, they can be safely moved up in the list. This is especially important for Knights of the Nine, which will have some fairly major problems unless loaded last (unless you get the UOP for KotN)

 

~ Major overhaul mods (OOO, Frans, MMM) should be loaded near the end. That gives you the most complete experience with any of those particular mods. It also lets you carefully choose which other mods to load afterwards... only move mods that you know will conflict and that you want the changes from. For example, I have Improved Soul Gems below OOO because I know that OOO changes the icons of some of the SG's, and ISG needs to be below to show through.

 

Some people will recommend putting larger mods first, but personally I disagree. There are a number of mods out there that make minor tweaks, and loading after a large mod will end up completely overwriting a chunk from one of the bigger mods because of the way conflicts work in Oblivion (even one minor change will take precedence over the entire record... for example, simply tweaking the speed of a weapon can cause every stat of that weapon to be retained to vanilla levels if loaded later).

 

So basically, it stacks up like this...

And a special-case warning for Knights.esp (Knights of the Nine) -- you may not be able to move it earlier than some other mods (some people have had problems after moving it before OOO, for example).

 

That's basically the structure I use and I have 140+ mods working well together.

Thanks you two. :)

 

I'm running on Vista, but UAC is off, so I've got it installed into the default ProgramFiles(x86) folder. Worked simply fine, until I uninstalled. I think I'll just uninstall again. I delete my entire Oblivion folder, just to be sure. But I will try the rebooting method as last time I don't believe I rebooted before I reinstalled (big oopsie, I know). I also have the Oblivion shortcut rewired to the OBSE launcher, so yes, I boot up with OBSE.

 

As for load order, I simply trust in going on with BOSS. Though I do reorder the ones it does not recognize; ie, clumping together all UL mods, loading DukePatrick's SES BETA last, ect ect.

 

I was weary as to weather or not it was one of my mods messing with stability, but I must also say I use NHancer to force SLI in Oblivion, which MAY have something to do with it, but I simple doubt it, I think it's a wonky install personally.

 

Any way, I'll let you all know what's up once I get done uninstalling, rebooting, installing, then getting all my mods in order.

Alright, so I got it up and running. I believe it was something to do with the .ini that was causing the crash. Now I'm up and running, but I still get odd crashes. Also, of modest concern, is that every time I quit Oblivion, itt crashes to desktop. Again, I'm not sure if a load order can fix these issues. Here it is, again:

The crash to desktop on exit is fairly normal. You can track down which mod(s) cause it, but it will be some mod you can't live without. And probably several mods will cause it.

That's what I've heard.

 

Also, I've looked at quite a few optimization guides. Nothing changing graphics, but using hardware more efficiently. It's said things about a line in the .ini:

 

 

Note: Upping iPreloadSizeLimit is required to prevent crashing with the extra grids in memory. The last two lines all but fix water reflection corruption. Note load times *will* increase, but it's well worth it.

Note: A value called uExteriorCellBuffer will adjust automatically to a minimum 64. This setting and iPreloadSizeLimit also affect performance, see Part 2.

Note: If you use the 4096x4096 texutres, or have a 2G machine, try a value of 209715200 or more for iPreloadSizeLimit.

I'm so very sorry for being so intuitive, I feel horrible, but I'm so new to Oblivion and I'm wanting to make sure I can make it as stable as all possible.

 

My hardware isn't much to do with it, I would think. 4GB RAM (4-4-4-12 timings), 9800GX2, 780i SLI mobo, E8400 CPU, and an X-FI X-Treme Gamer soundcard. 1TB Seagate HDD, with super quick cache...using Quarl's TP3R, optimized grass, have the GOTY Edition, Better Cities, al video options maxed out, UL, the woks, ya know...

 

So if anyone can tell me a thing or two about what I'm doing wrong, and a HUGE thanks to everyone who's helped me out already. bben46, do you have any idea if reordering the LO could/would fix any possible CTD causes, either while exiting or ingame while playing?

If you really want to get into the tweaking your game settings, the best help I've seen is this site http://www.tweakguides.com/

 

He keeps the site up to date and revises his guides on a regular basis.

The guy makes a lot of guides for games, plus he has system (non game) tweak guides and guides for different graphic cards as well. First go through the system guide for your system, then the video card tweaks and finally the game tweak guide.

I use his guides and have been well satisfied with the results.
