Hardcore mode like in Diablo II

Just wondering if anyone else plays this way, where if you die, you die and have to start a new character (and no reloads except for technical problems)? I don't like games where people just keep reloading and then brag about how high level their character is and how bad-ass he is.

I started skyrim this way. The first two characters were sneak archers, but I quickly learned that on the odd occasion that someone got past the arrows and in close, the results were sometimes fatal. The following character was a sneaky sword and shield fighter, but he was flamed by an atronoch when I was just messing around and showing my son something (still kicking myself about that one). So sneaky sword and shield fighter #2 is now out and about, and she's level 20 using thieves guild armor, no magic (except the occasional alteration of iron ore to silver and gold) and perks in 1-handed, shield, light armor, sneak, smithing, enchanting and alchemy. So far so good (default adept difficulty level). The only power enhancing mods I'm using are 1) left handed rings (seemed to make sense); 2) cloaks (again, makes sense); and 3) faster horses (ibid). I'm also using frostfall, but can't be bothered with the food/eating mod (I have enough trouble feeding myself). I also do use fast travel, mainly because I would get bored otherwise.

Anyone doing this kind of thing a different way? I thought about dual wielding, but again -- one death is it, and the loss of defensive capability struck me as unwise.

Seems exceedingly tedious to me. Then again my game is set up so it is almost impossible for me to go 10 minutes without getting one hit by an iron dagger.

I guess for me it's the opposite logic -- replaying scenarios again and again after getting killed would be tedious in my mind, and would ruin the fantasy/illusion of a character actually making it through that world. The mortality of hardcore ads a heck of a lot of excitement for me -- I do get scared when a sabre cat ambushes me, and I think twice before taking on a bunch of Alkiri warriors just because some woman asked me to (as opposed to "bah, let's see what happens if I do this...").

I don't start a new character if he dies.....though I also don't like the break in immersion if he does die.....and so am a very cautious player....very rarely do I face a Dovahkin death, the highest majority of games I get through he never dies....tis truly a rare event to die.....I am a stickler for 'realism' and so don't use healing potions....no shame in running if overwhelmed.... :tongue: ....will take buffer's whilst out of combat and knowing combat is seconds away.....doesn't use enchanted Armors or Weapons (aside from one necklace and one ring....always the same ones.... which I am trying to wean off of also)....I also use mods that make combat and stealth more realistic (more difficult)....I play a Stealth Archer/Alchemist....uses a lot of Poisons... :devil: .....also lays a lot of booby traps (Bear Traps and Oil/Fire Traps) and baits the opponents into coming to him through those traps.... :devil: ....With smithed Light Armor and Duel Wield smithed Swords if his forced to go to to toe....he is also quite acrobatic (more help from mods) so can usually range himself out again pretty fast or avoid most hits.....My aim is for 'realism' in what he can do and what can be done to him and his death is an element that breaks it...so work hard to make sure that doesn't happen.... :tongue: ....Though I don't use any mods to enforce, for realism once again he does eat, drink (water, juices, milk) and sleep appropriately, never Fast Travels or takes Carriages and doesn't carry or loot unrealistic items or weights....My one concession (aside from the ring and necklace) to fantasy is he is a Werewolf....I always infect my Dovahkins with that....using a mod, not the Companions.....All makes the game play much more fun for me.

I play a cloth mage and I like to go down mountains the fast way... My games would be really short if I couldn't reload :P

There is a post a few pages back about someone making a mod (I think) to force this on you, though, turning Skyrim into a Roguelike. I admit that it sounds very fun to do but I'm too attached to my character and don't want to lose him ^^;

I'm a Dark Souls player. Death is my constant companion.

Thats just my way of playing. I prefer really hard fights that take thinking to go past and actually require several reloads before I can actually figure out a way to defeat it. No reload just strikes me as a fun killer.

I played Fallout 3 that way and it was somewhat fun. I'm finding this new "one death is it" way of playing much more fun and intense now, however. Also, if I screw up and use my grand soul gem on the wrong item I was trying to enchant, or if I'm disarmed and can't find my weapon, that's that and I move on. Somehow it's liberating playing for 3 hour sessions and never hitting 'save' once (the auto saves are enough if there's a technical glitch, which hasn't happened for me yet).

Nice! Although not even a carriage?! Where's the lack of realism in taking a carriage, or using enchanted weapons in a fantasy world where the enemies do? I guess the whole magic thing is a blow to realism of course. For me though, it's a question of internal logic and consistency -- this world has magic, so I use it (as given, not via some overpowered mod that gives you superman as a follower and Excalibur as your weapon). Since this world doesn't allow me to come back from the dead, however, that's it.

@ Rompster

The Carriages: This one I guess is more from an RP personality perspective....grunty, gritty lone wolf Warrior....is a helpful enough kinda dude, but as a Werewolf does tend to shy away from human company and is much more comfortable out on the Tundra, in the Forests, etc... than in populated areas, so takes his own sweet time getting from one populated point to another.....As for me, I like the adventures that befall him as he travels on foot.... :happy:

Magic: I do agree with you....Magic is a part of Skyrim and I certainly have no qualms or questions about my dude facing magic casters....just the enchanted armors and weapons feel a little over the top for me....that being said that ring he uses does summon a Sabre Cat.... :blush: ....the cat to me is on par with the weapons and armor as in being over the top...Though I RP (pretend) in game that the cat is not a summoned beast but a pet...is just a matter of convenience to tell the cat to 'Stay and Wait'....(unsummon) when in populated areas....shops (the cat takes up a lot of space.... :tongue: ...)...and when wanting to have a complete stealth run and lay traps in interiors.....The cat is by his side when his outside, though don't tend to see a great deal of him in mountainous regions....I mountain goat a lot.... :blush: ...the cat has to take the long way around.....I guess the cat is my Superman follower.... :ermm: ....such a great meat shield and distraction though.... :pinch: .....The Necklace gives 38% resistance to Frost, Fire and Shock and 14% resistance to Magic.....seems like something a Warrior would want to wear in a world of Magic....I am still a bit iffy about it though.....The poisons, archery and stealth do most of the work for him though...is often unseen unless choosing to be seen....The Silent Warrior approach is pretty much my first and prime line of defense in keeping him alive....The Cat doesn't see a lot of action, which I prefer, because he simply is over powered in my opinion....is there for desperate situations more than anything and I think his adorable.... :blush:

I don't see how not using healing potions is realistic. this is a world where there is a drink that can fix your wounds and stop the bleeding. it's actually unrealistic to not use them in combat.
