Finally got IH working, except...

Okay, after giving up on switching from Convenient Horses for months, I finally gave it another try recently - took the nuclear option - and after a solid two days of downloading, reinstalling, and reorganizing my game and mods, I have Immersive Horses up and running again. All seemed to be running smoothly until I tried to adopt a stolen horse. I rode the vanilla horse from north of Whiterun far enough that when I dismounted I got the "temporary steed" status message, but when I selected "Adopt" it says "This horse cannot be adopted". I tried using the console to spawn in a horse and went through the motions, and got exactly the same error. Anybody have any idea why that might be?
