Modpatcher balance mods not being allowed by Steam

Why does Steam reset my Xcom mods? Every time I mod the exe with any of the big balance mods Steam does a "completing installation" and resets everything. If I make it read only I can't run the game at all. I checked the exe with HxD to make sure it modded the file. If I mod one or two things myself it works okay like second wave or sectoid health. Is nobody else having this problem?

I set it to not update and tried it again and it still did it. But I then did some other things in Steam and it works now. Strange. All I did was set a new download region without restarting steam and then copied the modded exe to the saves directory and now it works. Thanks for your input. Edited by JKDC

I found starting the game from a desktop shortcut, rather than from within the steam UI avoided this problem ... Might work for you ... The only other problem I've incurred, is every time I modify the .exe, Zone Alarm pops up sayin the x-com .exe is behaving suspiciously ... Obviously the "modpatcher" creates a new (different hash ?) on the .exe so Zone Alarm thinks it's a different file EVERY DAMN TIME ... But I can live with it, as alt-tab'ing doesn't seem to bother x-com all that much ...

Having the same problem over here. Using a desktop shortcut instead didn't fix the problem.

So far I've tried:

Turning off automatic updates

Desktop shortcut

Yet it seems no matter what, Steam insists on "completing installation" and ends up replacing my modified exe with the original one, making it impossible to do any sort of modification. Makes me wonder what idiot decided it would be a good idea for steam to force what it thinks is the "correct" version of the game onto a customer, no matter what the customer actually wants.

I'm guessing something is messed up in the Steam config files. It shouldn't do this unless something is wrong with the files or Steam itself.

Try to:

1. Uninstall the game.

2. Restart Steam.

3. Install the game.

4. Restart Steam.

5. Run the game, start a mission, quit game.

6. Restart Steam.

7. Install mod.

8. Restart Steam.

9. Run the game. See what happens.
