KaptainKildarby
I have tried multiple times to get this mod to boot, and quite frankly, I'm stumped. I have: Re-installed the game, applied the patch, set it to offline, started through steam. This fails, and it attempts to Complete Installation. After remaining at 0% completion for roughly 20 seconds, there is an error message, Code 3, Steam servers are too busy to handle your request. This is the only outcome I have managed to achieve. I have also tried manually disconnecting from the internet while attempting start-up, disabling automatic update checks in Steam, trying to boot through a desktop shortcut, and multiple combinations of these. I'm out of ideas. I am uninstalling the game, and re downloading it now, but clearly I am doing something wrong. Anyone else have a solution? Sinister seemed to have something, and I would like to know what it was, because I have tried every suggested solution I've found with the same result each time. BlackAlpha
Here's a message from another user that could potentially fix the problem: I found the problem - I had steam verify the cache to get a clean copy of the game, but that meant when I ran the game steam overwrote it with the new downloaded copy every time it would detect the file was "corrupt". Basically, I had to get a new copy from steam, then RUN the game so it finished validating it, THEN apply the mod. It works fine now. Sorry for the confusion. Time to check out the new version! So: Reinstall. Start game (while online) and quit. Install mod and start game with mod (while in offline mode). FlyingHigh10000000
No need to run Steam in offline mode. There's a post in the modpatcher thread which shows how to prevent the X-Com exe from "phoning home".
BlackAlpha
Another solution: Okay, I found a way to get this mod working and you can leave Steam online as well: -Do a verify integrity-After the check is complete Steam will download the original exe (and files) again-Start a game with the original exe, Steam will complete the installation-Quit from the game, copy over the mod files and start the patcher-After that you can play the game with the mod... [deleted a part of the quote] You still need to block the exe in your firewall or edit your hosts file if you want to leave Steam online. It seem the key is to either reinstall the game or do a verify integrity of game files. After that, start the game one time to "complete the installation" properly. Once that is done, Steam will have confirmed that the game is installed properly and it should then not try to restore original files anymore. So you can then begin modding the game. BanjoOz
This is another reason why I HATE Steam. It's MY game. I PAID for it. If I want to run it with a modded exe that's my business... just as it is if I screw up my install/computer with it, that's my problem. Hand-holding and trying to control what I can do and play with the game I paid money for really makes me cross and IMO is what encourages rather than prevents piracy. I bought a retail disc to avoid downloading 10gb+ but yet was forced to download a 2gb patch (wtf needs 2gb?!) before I was allowed to even play the game, thanks to Steam! :( I only installed it for XCom, otherwise it wouldn't even be on my PC. I keep it permanently in offline when playing, and - as I've done before - will "no-steam" patch any Steam game I can. I pay honestly for my games, so I don't want to be told I can't play them unless I'm connected online to some control-freak "always on and watching you" update system. DRM is what kills PC sales at least in my case; I'll usually buy a console version unless it's gimped because I know what to expect and not have to jump through hoops to play it. I only bought XCom on PC for modding (I bought second PC copies of F3 and FNV for that reason!) so find it even more galling when Firaxis hints at trying to stop that rather than aid it. Then they'll no doubt complain - as many other companies do - that it's not worth making PC versions of their games because they don't sell as well as the console versions. (sorry for the rant, still having flashbacks of Half Life 2 "sorry, can't play today, you need to update first... on dialup!")
