Smith099
I was very surprised to find child characters in FO3. BethSoft left them out of both Morrowind and Oblivion, which is not surprising considering that the American Congress passed a law pushed by the anti-video game lobby that prohibits game companies from putting children into games in such a way as that the player could kill the children. How Congress chose to define "child" I'm not sure, probably as anyone under the "age" of 16. (That's just a guess, partly due to that age being what I would say, and based on what I'm seeing in Fallout 3 with "Little Lamplight" and "Big Town.") The point I'm trying to make is this: Many of us remember the mess that came up just after the release of Oblivion with the first "nude mod" for that game. While that was just as much BethSoft's fault (my personal feeling) for not checking to make sure someone couldn't get in and do exactly what was done, it still took only a few days, not even weeks, for someone to find a way to make female characters topless. How long will it take for someone to make a mod allowing children to be killed in FO3? What kind of anti-video game backlash will that cause? Fallout 3 is already rated Mature by the American ESRB, as was Oblivion before the nude mod. Is creating a mod that allows the in-game children to be killed serious enough to cause the American government to decide that the law has been violated and demand a recall of the game? If it happened would it be a big enough deal to threaten the existance BethSoft? {Please note that this is NOT for political discussion regarding what you do or do not think about America/American Political figures/American Politics of any form. This is posted as: A) a warning to people who might have been thinking about creating a mod of the type described, as well as to the general community so that everyone might be aware of the potential pitfalls of hosting such a mod; and B) to generate discussion regarding the potential pitfalls of the apperance of such a mod and how it could affect the gaming and modding community in general and the Fallout 3 community specifically.}
Circuitous
Oblivion was rated T before the nude mod - however, the nude mod isn't the reason it was changed to M. One look at the Dark Brotherhood/Oblivion Realms/etc. will tell you why they changed their minds, as well as how "thorough" the ESRB actually is. I don't think a child-killing mod is going to start a riot or anything, but you can bet there'll be some people that aren't happy with it (other content notwithstanding). Mansh00ter
You can't really stop people from modding in anything they want in a game such as this (that is, modable). I also don't think it will start a riot, but it may cause simmilar problems such as Hot Coffee mod did for GTA San Andreas. But you can't really blame Bethesda for whatever modders do... after all, there is a sex mod for Morrowind, and I don't recall that game getting an AO rating. As for the Killable Kids mod, I think it is inevitable. Certain kids in this game are too snotty for their own good and the public demand for a mod that allows you to distribute some shotgun love to the offending brats will be immense. Obsessed117
I don't think user created content should give a company backlash at all. Thats like complaining to children's show makers about Rule 34s...nuff said. (if you don't know what rule 34 just google it)
vash1985
the whole issue with the "hot coffee" and nude models was mostly do to the fact that the content was not modded in but was already a feature in the games. features that had been covered up. the ESRB could give 2 shits less what someone does with the game after its been bought. its outa their hands at that point. their job is to make sure the game is given an accurate rating so the purchaser knows exactly what is being bought and therefore cannot claim ignorance if they are offended by it and want to raise an issue about it. about the legality issue with child killing in the game if its modded in, i dont know what could be done to prevent such mods, but i would not put it past some people to raise a big stink about it
wharmaster
hmmm...wonder if this has anything to do with them not giving us the Construction Kit....maybe the legality of them providing us with tools to mod the game in such a way that we can massacre innocent obcenity-spewing 10 year olds? vash1985
it could be hard coded that childern cannot be harmed, and if it isint that would be the win win solution i think
BanjoOz
It's a LAW not to allow ANY killable children in games now? Geez... :wallbash: Seriously, unkillable NPCs (kids or otherwise) is a MAJOR pet peeve of mine in supposed "open world" games. I don't mind in some CRPG if they stop you killing off folks (FFVII, you just kill Sepheroth in the 'flashback'... game over!), but unless they give you a darn good reason (you never meet them) even fake ways to protect folks (they're behind glass all the time ala Dead Space... cheap!) annoys me. The second worst is the "big red x" (Call of Juarez style!) that simply STOPS you firing on certain people... but the worst is invincible NPCs! The mod I'd MOST want is to be able to kill "invincible" NPCs... even if it means being branded "Childkiller" or such.
Roflcore
"Inside the folder : \My Documents\My Games\Fallout3 Open file FALLOUT.ini search for 'bForceReloadOnEssentialCharacterDeath=1' and change to 0 and 'bEssentialTakeNoDamage=1' and change to 0" This way you can kill invincible npcs like armanda. Children not (however this is already possible using the console)
Jlop985
I never heard of such a law banning the killing of children in a video game. What was the bill called?
