Last firaxis/2k game ill buy...

Shame too, they made some of my favourites (Borderlands 2 and Xcom are just some of them), but a company that takes direct action like this to stop modding is a complete tool of a company in my book and deserves no funding whatsoever.

I'm still hoping this is a mistake somehow. Like they didn't think it through and only applied these changes to stop cheating or something, not stop mods. I'm hoping they will fix this issue soon.

If they don't fix the issue, then it's clear they are trying to combat mods, which is sad.

By the way, Gearbox made Borderlands 2, not Firaxis. I think Firaxis made Civilization 5, which is a really good game.

Civ V is a great game with tons of DLC!!! Fortunately they didn't cook the textures and models of that game to limit modding.

This is what they said they would do to balance the multiplayer point cost of units.

Doesn't even require a patch, which is nice.

That it hurts modding? Well, I bet they didn't even consider that modders would modify the executable! =P

I actually only bought the PC version *because* of hopes of modding it. Frankly, just the little things we've been able to mod so far (DefaultGameCore stuff) makes me pleased with my decision. I never use Steam unless I have to (only reinstalled it again for XCOM) and don't mind keeping it in offline mode anyway... but this does remind me why I hate the "service" so much.

Despite growing up a PC gamer (I fell in love with games after my first 'Sierra' adventure!) I tend to only play console titles these days, having grown tired of the constant need to update hardware to play anything on PC along with the ridiculous "treat customers as criminals" DRM that began to creep in; I actually wouldn't have bought XCOM for PC had I known it would require Steam! An almost day-one two gig (!) patch and now THIS (disabling mods unless in offline mode?!) reminded me of my hate.

Anyway, if Firaxis are truly doing this to "discourage modding" (not that they'd say that) then this may seriously be my last Firaxis game ever too... which is a real shame because they are one of the few devs who's work I respect as well as like.

On the subject of companies being "pro" or "anti" modding... do companies never stop and look at some of the most ridiculously long-lived games (Doom, The Sims, Oblivion, etc.) and figure out why that is the case? Or do they actually not want people playing their games too long so they can sell more sequels...?

Yes, but 2K were the publishers for borderlands 2....

And i said "last game ill buy from firaxis/2k" so i meant both of the companies.

Some people are making huge assumptions and possibly, immediately jumping to the wrong conclusion.

Apart from some files being updated (which they said they'd do for other purposes and it might even be something else other than that), can someone link to a source for all this speculation that they're intentionally attempting to block modding? You do realise of course, that this could just be a side effect of other changes.

Yes it's a pain, yes it's unfortunate, but to condemn Firaxis over this without knowing their intentions and with no substantial evidence is unfair.

I'm not saying I would rule it out as a possibility and I know there are reasons as to why they might want to prevent modding, but based on what we've got to go on, I think it's a pretty big leap to come to that conclusion :)

Hopefully it was just a byproduct of other changes that they made and they disdn't realize that they effected the modding efforts. Modding and DLC can coexist in the same space. Bethesda has proven that with opening endorsing modding and still selling a ton of Dawnguard and Hearthfire downloads.

Well its mainly the fact that they went from having easily accessible .ini files that could be modded, to baking those into the .exe making it harder to mod, and then suddenly making the game read the same ini files from a central server making it even harder to mod.

Sure this last step might make sense in the view of what they said about updating earlier, but the step from having open ini files to baking them into the exe is a rather strange one (especially since they left the original ini files in the open, just not being used by the game).

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it probably is a duck...
