Denamic
I've had Dogmeat die a few times, sure. But I find him a superb 'tank'.Plan your carnage according how he acts, and all should be fine.He can even take on a behemoth, if you stand close to him and feed him stimpacks constantly while jamming the mutant's head full of whatever ammo your gun is using.Even though Dogmeat is constantly knocked over before he can actually do anything, the behemoth doesn't seem to be interested in you at all as long as Dogmeat's around. As for Fawkes being the toughest... Wouldn't know, since most enemies die too quickly to measure his toughness.Clover is very tough. She'll chop down muties like grass if you give her some power armour and a Shishkebab. She's probably the toughest companion I've had so far, if not the most powerful offensively. I usually take care of that part. I like melee companions, since they'll keep the enemies off of me while I can shoot them at my leisure.Shame I can't have her when I'm good. FalseEmperor
I am a HUUUUGE fan of Charon. He's also pretty unique in that you can use him no matter what your karma is, at least as far as my testing has shown. Also as another poster has already stated, he is a crack shot with his shotgun. I've seen him drop raiders and muties from distances that I would have to use a far more accurate weapon to score a hit. I also decked him out in some metal armor and gave him a Chinese assault rifle with some ammo just in case he wanted a little variety in his death dealing. Typically he sticks to ol' blue (shotgun) but on occasion he'll pull out the machine gun. I have had him die on occasion but for the most part he is a worthy traveling companion and combat assistant. Plus anyone who does what Charon does to a certain someone is alright in my book.
TehProfileth
Don't forget my favorite Star Cross, what a odd name to have to grow up with, I wonder if her parents were religious?

NXK
is there a possibility to tell the companions which weapon to use ... and only THIS and NO OTHER! ?? i really hate it when clover starts to go melee frenzy in the middle of a bunch of super mutant beasts while i'm equipping my nuka-grenades (100 explosives with rank 3 perk for + 60% ...) even if i put her on "ranged only" she goes melee as soon as an enemy appears that does not have a ranged weapon ... annoying, rly,
Denamic
Since you say 'she', I'm assuming you mean clover or cross, and both are much better melee fighters than they are ranged fighters. I suspect they switch to melee when they see it as suitable, since it conserves ammo, it does more damage and they can block melee enemies. TehProfileth
OT They really need a mod to make npc's and followers (that is the original and that is what I am sticking with) actually use ammo and be able to run out because that was the best part (and by best I meant scariest) that my allie might run out of ammo and try to beat down an enemy raider with a rocket, and the rocket launcher dudes can not just keep firing those rockets are expensive for gods sake.
