Legal non-steam skyrim disk installations?

I thought I had heard all of the lame excuses for piracy, but this is a new one on me.

We have to go by UK & US rules on copyright, and the EULA - NO giving free copies to your friends - as this is the very definition of game piracy from back when people copied 5.25" floppy disks of games and handed them out to friends. The probability of an individual getting caught, or even prosecuted if they do pirate is very low - While the probability of The Nexus being prosecuted for allowing pirated materials to be distributed or allowing discussion of piracy is very high. :pinch:

That said, for those whining that their stolen copied version doesn't work - they did NOT get a legal copy from a friend, And that 'friend' likely didn't have a legal copy either - but a torrented copy and that is absolutely NOT covered by any known ruling that you read somewhere. As for the EU allowing piracy, I actually doubt that and have never heard of any such law. Did you read that on the internet somewhere? As we all know that if you see it on the internet it MUST be true. If you give me a link, I'll take a look. :ermm:

These are actually copyright laws that apply to software in general and not just games. Did you read in the EULA that you were being sold a license to play ONE copy of the game and that license is not transferable?

There are various rulings that allow archive copies of software for backup purposes, Typically one copy only - but they do not allow for giving them away either. Steam has countered that with their once you buy it, you can download it from them again any time if you lose it, erase it or get a new computer. So far as I know this has not even been challenged in court yet.

Now, whatever the law is (Or whatever you may think it is) where you are, here we go by the site Terms of Service.

Here is the relevant section.

Piracy
We have a strict anti-piracy policy on these forums and the Nexus sites and we take a proactive and pre-emptive stance on anyone we believe is using a pirated version of any game or software.
If you give us reason to believe that you are a software pirate you will be instantly banned.

Look closely, all we need is a reason to believe that you are a pirate - either a distributor or user and we can ban. So, if you want to stay here - It's very simple - don't give us that reason.

Now, we also ban for trying to debate piracy, piracy laws or even discussing piracy in the forums. - So, Technically you could be banned for that post. If you do want to discuss it with a moderator, administrator or the site owner - please do it through private messaging to avoid breaking the rules.

I have skyrim and it had nothing to do with steam. I bought a disc installer of ebay and I can't get any updates because I guess it has to be on steam to get updates so I advice you get it for steam instead of a pirated version.

Second hand Steam-only games are not legal either.

Come back when you have a legal copy.

Okay, this is what I did, I got Skyrim legendary edition, and I registed it, installed it and then, I cracked it. as far as I know, Since I own the game, Cracking it isn't ilegal, (If that was the case mods would be illegal, especially the 4gb patch and SKSE which *can* both circumvent the DRM of skyrim) So, you can't have a legal Copy of skyrim Without steam, (unless you have that weird russian version? I don't know), but you don't need steam to run/play it.

Way to necro

Why would you go to the effort of cracking it if you own it?

Well, I find it eaiser for me to be able to go from one computer, to another without having to log into steam to play the game. also, having a cracked executable does have significant effects with heavily modded skyrim, making the game more stable, since the executable is already maluble. (200+ mods at a time) the same with the fallout games, and many other games as well. I also like to be able to install my games on my portable SSD, so I can just plug it into my friends computer and play it there. Can't do that with an uncracked executable, you have to instal steam, redownload it, and blah, blah, blah...... I find it suits my lifestyle better if I do it that way. ("Way to Necro?") NOT TO MENTION, THE PAIN IT WOULD BE TO REDOWNLOAD ALL OF MY MODS, JUST TO PLAY IT ONCE A MONTH ON MY FRIENDS COMPUTER. Yeah, That would take up so much space, I already have it taking up 50gb.

You can do whatever you want with YOUR legal version. Short of sharing it. However, As we do not support 'cracked' versions, as for support - not allowed here.

As soon as you 'allow' someone else to use your 'cracked' version you have become a pirate. Now how will you handle it when you best friend begs you to let them have a copy of YOUR personal 'cracked' version? You are then put into the dilemma of telling your now former best friend no, or being forever a pirate. Giving a copy to a friend is exactly how piracy started.

Closed as this is getting too close to a discussion of piracy.
