augie doggy
As the title says, how can one make a custom helmet with Maya? I've been searching around for a while, and I've only found an equivalent tutorial for Blender. Also, if possible, can I make a helmet that has two separate, but intersecting, meshes in it? This way I'd save a lot of polygons and make texturing easier. This is what I mean: http://img160.imageshack.us/img160/5390/capfalconvt2.jpg The falcon emblem and the rest of the helmet are two separate meshes. (The textures are simply placeholders.) And what would be a general poly count limit? (As you can see, the poly count for this model is relatively low, but this is for future reference.) Thanks for any help. ihateregisteringeverywhere
As far as polycount goes - keep it to a minimum but high enough not to loose shape. I actualy think that Beth was fairly benevolent with the poly count, yet it works well with even higher poly counts. Just try to keep it optimal and don't bother with it too much. 700-1500 per piece is optimal, up to 3k should be still fine. But look at beth's work for refference (for example the akaviri helm is 1257 polygons). Yes, your model can have as many sepparate meshes as you'd like. You actualy MUST separate the meshes with different textures. Intersecting meshes are fine too as long as it doesn't create any strange visual artefacts, but I guess you know that allready. SickleYield
I use Blender so I can't help you with specific modeling tips - but you will definitely need the NIF scripts for Maya in order to export your helmet: Maya NIF Plugin at Sourceforge
ihateregisteringeverywhere
Speaking of the nif scripts. I hope you don't happen to own the personal learning edition. The scripts just won't install on that.
augie doggy
Speaking of the nif scripts. I hope you don't happen to own the personal learning edition. The scripts just won't install on that. Don't worry about that, I have a student version (it's identical to the full commercial version, but cheaper). Also, thanks to everyone for the help.
