Using a Topic's 'Result Script' in Quests to change the local variables of an NPC

I'm very new to Oblivion's scripting, so bear with me. I need to change the local variables (the ones from the NPC's script) of the NPC that is being talked to by the player as the player chooses a topic, and that change has to happen through the 'Result Script' field of the topic. Is it possible? If it is, how can I do that? If it's not, are there any alternatives? Please, let me know if my question is phrased poorly, or if there's something that seems to be left out of the question yet is very important, I'll then try to elaborate.
