Ancient Magics

While a friend of mine and I had a conversation about Skyrims spell-system, we came up with a very good idea.

Do you still remember the good old RPG's and their way of obtaining spells? You had to find them, you had to fight for them, you had to obtain them.

You just didn't walk into a shop, buy every single spell you think you might need, walk off and end up never using 90% of them like you do in Skyrim.

Our idea is to bring the good old system to Skyrim.

http://imageshack.us/a/img827/1759/trennstrich.png

BASICS:

The mod-idea is to take out almost every single spell from all the shops of Skyrim and to scatter them over the world, waiting for you to hunt down and collect them.

[The intention of the mod is not to add any new spells, if you thought so!]

Sadly I don't have a very huge knowledge in using the Creation-Kit and so I would like to pass this idea over to someone else, if someone is interested in doing it.

Furthermore I would like this mod to be as good as possible, which I, with my abilities in modding, wouldn't be able to achieve.

I am not interested in the fame or what so ever, I am interested in making the game better and will of course help where ever i can.

WAY OF DOING IT:

As already mentioned, the spells should be 'scattered' over the world, in various ways to obtain them. Very basic spells could still be bought in a shop, but the majority of them should to be found.

Based on their efficiency, there should be different ways to obtain them, so not every spell is limited in only one copy and way of finding it.

Here are some examples of ways to obtain them:

Basic spells:
(As already mentioned)
  • Can still be bought in shops

Medium spells:
(Various places to be found)

  • Leveled list

  • Next to magical shops

  • 'Ordinary' chests or containers

  • Thievery/Pickpocketing

Stronger spells:
(Some places to be found)

  • Dungeons
(In special places or at the end of one)

  • Enemy loot
    (Loot of stronger enemys)

  • Hidden in Ruins and/or secret places

  • Quest rewards
    (Based on their difficulty)

  • Dragon loot
    (Strong dragons (Old/Ancient/...))

  • Maybe some kind of rituals
    (medium costs)

Very strong spells:
(Unique/Only one place to be found)

  • In very special places

  • Boss loot

  • Dragon loot
    (Only dragons with special names)

  • Quest rewards
    (Based on their difficulty)

  • Maybe some kind of rituals
    (high costs)

WHY?

Let's be honest: The way of using magic in Skyrim is not the best. Luckily there are various mods out there, that change, alter and extend it with also adding various new ones. But I haven't seen any mod so far to do the same thing as this mod should do.

The goal is to make obtaining a new spell a lot more interesting, satisfying and rewarding. You will automatically pay a lot more attention to every single one, testing it, exploring it capabilities and integrate them into your very own way of playing.

Furthermore this will hopefully add a lot more immersion, strategy and depth to the magic system, as well as the overall game by adding more role-play-feeling and raising its difficulty in its very own way.

And maybe a little nostalgia for the 'oldschool-ones' among you ;)

So please let me know what you think, if you are interested in this idea and if there is anyone who would like to translate it into action.

Oh and of course feel free to add your own ideas! :)

And I would be really happy to have someone, who might also consider making it compatible with other mods.

(If this mod is well accepted by the community)

Good idea, seems do-able.

I dont like messing with loot tables or leveled lists or item placement, so I may not be able to help much.

You misspelled "Skyrim" in your last paragraph, and that last "thing" should probably be "think"and "I" is always capital in "I'm".

Wait a second...

Did... did you make a graphic for a mod idea?

Who does that?

Looks nice.

Thank you, good to hear that this should be do-able :)

And thank you for pointing out the mistakes, i took care of them.

Well, apparently i do :D I enjoy doing graphical stuff.

One plausible solution that I could see is instead of completely removing the books from the merchants, one could make them incredibly expensive, and scatter the books throughout Skyrim. That way, there is more of an incentive to go out and find the books yourself. Of course some of the more powerful spells would only be available though finding them after a difficult boss battle.

It is a good idea though, I might consider doing it after I'm done with my current projects.

I totally support this idea.

- Maybe some of the spells should also be available by thievery/pickpocketing.

- It would be good if this mod would be compatible with other magic-extending mods

Unfortunatly I don't have any idea of modding, too.

Thanks :)

I will add your idea to the first post.

And I already thought about the second thing (making it compatible with other mods). But at first, we will have to do the basic mod :)

That could also be an option. But honestly I would prefer removing most of the spells completly from the vendors, because that was the main reason for this mod (for example, after a few hours after starting a new character, I always find myself with a huge amount of money). Maybe there could be two different files :) The normal one and another one for those who want to have the books to be able to be bought, but extremely expensive, as you suggested.

Recall Morrowind, only certain priests were able to give you the mark and recall spells, and as I recall (pun), you had to find these spells in two completely different areas, all the good stuff took forever to track down and buy since you were broke and weak and there was no fast travel, so everything was a true mission to accomplish. (on a side note it would be nice to have a mod that gives you a menu option to remove fast travel and bring it back if you change your mind, all the remove fast travel mods I've tried are permanent solutions)

How about you just do away with the books altogether and make spells a much more immersive part of the story. Think about spells as they actually make sense in a fantasy world and how they should be obtained. Strive for realism more than anything else and you'll make a great mod.

Well, if it is possible, then ... HELL YEAH, that would be awesome :D If some modder could confirm it's possiblity, I would definitely give a thought about a whole concept, how to implement it into the world of Skyrim.

But I'm a bit skeptical how that might work together with other magic mods.

So if i understand that correctly, you would like to add possibility to get certrain spells only from special priests? I like that. And I like Morrowind  (Can't wait to get back to Solstheim with the upcoming DLC).

(And to your side note: The Alpha/Beta Version of the new SkyUI adds MCM (an ingame configuration menu for mods). And I'm sure that some fast travel mods will make use of it.)
