CTD when loading or changing zones after becoming Arch-mage

RESOLVED: This was caused by some bug with the mannequin added by Obscure's College of Winterhold to the Arch-mage's quarters, which does not appear until the PC becomes Arch-mage. It can be fixed by installing the mod "Mannequins stay put." lol nope, not actually resolved after all, more information in second post

I finished the College of Winterhold questline and became Arch-mage. I hung around the college and progressed in a couple more quests, went to the Arch-mage's quarters to sleep, and quit the game for a while. When I started playing again I immediately realized that whenever I tried to leave the room or save (both quicksave and permanent save) I get a CTD. In the case of changing zones, I go through the whole loading screen first, then get the crash. I went back to a save I made a little after defeating Ancano, which was made in the Hall of Attainment. Same problem. My last save before that was just before entering Labyrinthian, and there the bug did not occur.

So I went back to that save and once more played to the point of beating Ancano. Made a permanent save, quit the game for a while. Came back and I start getting the CTD again. This time, while redoing the quest, I made a save when I arrived in Winterhold with the Staff of Magnus. That save does not have the crash, so the crucial point seems to be completing the questline and becoming Arch-mage. As I said before, the problem does not start immediately when I pass that point, only when I exit the game and come back.

Some other things I've tried, none of which prevented the CTD:

  • Unequipping the Arch-mage's robes
  • Disabling Obscure's College of Winterhold and Immersive College NPCs
  • Running LOOT

Edit: I have done some more experimentation, and the crucial point appears to be not becoming arch-mage, but entering the arch-mage's quarters for the first time. I defeated Ancano again and made a save immediately after the scene with the Psijics and receiving the robes. Exited the game, loaded it, and no CTD when changing zones. Went to the quarters, made a save there, and when I restarted and loaded that save, I had the CTD. Therefore, my best guess is that this is a problem with Obscure's College of Winterhold. I will contact the mod author and let him know.

I am making a second post, since I have found a couple new things in the course of my ongoing troubleshooting.

First of all, the Arch-mage's quarters does not appear to be important after all. I will list below the conditions in which a CTD occurs about 80-90% of the time (but not always):

  1. The save being loaded was made after completing the quest "The Eye of Magnus"
  2. The save is the first save to be loaded after running the game
  3. After loading, I attempt to transition to a different cell or make a new save

Something unusual I have discovered is that if I load an affected save, then load the same save again or another affected save (either in-game or by returning to the main menu), I will not experience the CTD. From all this, I would surmise both of the following:

  1. The bug is caused by completing The Eye of Magnus, or something that occurs around that point
  2. The bug is likely caused by something about the process of loading a save

I am honestly pretty stumped here. I've put nearly 100 hours into this playthrough and now it's semi-broken. I guess I could just continue by loading my saves twice every time I start, but that hardly seems advisable. If anyone could help I would really appreciate it.

Have you resolved this issue?

I am having the exact same problem.

I have immersive college of winterhold and the midden expanded mods installed, but uninstalling these mods has not stopped the problem from occurring.

I also have interesting npc's mod installed and while this mod cannot be un-installed I have added the 3DNPC_Winterhold compatibility patch and still no better :(

I have cleaned my save game with the Skyrim Save Cleaner and that didnt not help either.

As you indicated, If I load my save game twice in a row, the ctd when changing zones does not occur.

Anyone have any advice?

Please help!
