Skyrim crushing my entire computer

Lately (about a week ago) Skyrim started crushing the whole computer after about 30 mins/ 1 hour of play.

The monitor goes black and it says d-sub power saving mode... The keyboard doesnt work and the only way to get the pc back to life is to manually shut it down and restart. It doesnt happen with any other game. Also pc performance (fps) while playing skyrim has dropped considerably, probably related.

I thought it had something to do with mods so i uninstalled every single one, no luck, reinstallation doesnt do it either.

Please anyone that knows whats going on or has any ideas on how to fix it help.

Sounds to me as if your computer is going into a power saving mode - Hibernation or sleep. Look in the computer settings to see if there is a way to avoid the power saving mode. If this is a laptop - low battery can cause this.

Don't some laptop settings go into powersave if the computer thinks it's inactive? had this happen w/ my old laptop, would be watching a movie full screen adn had to keep alt tabbing to chcek.

Pretty sure there are settings that can cause it, too. if you updated recently, check to make sure it's not set to go to sleep after a certain amount of time.

Also, with laptops it's a VERY good idea to keep an eye on the battery life.

its not a laptop and its not power saving as in "if you dont use the computer the screen goes black" and all that, it goes black while im using it (playing the game) and no amount of ctrl alt del or alt tab or nothing works... How would i go about checking the computer settings for power saving mode ?

Also seconds later the sound also lags and all i hear is a monotonous sound sort of like interference, hard to explain.

Its worth noting that this does not happen with any other game or program.

that does sound a bit like a glitch, but go into the start menu, to control panel. from there should be power options. you'll have to examine the different settings, but generally it would be something alon the lines of "shut down if the ocmputer is inactive for 20 minutes" or whatever. (go to sleep is what it would actually say i think.)

The thing with some of the computers is, if you go full screen they register that (for movies at least in my experience) as inactive. i'm not sure why, given that you're running a program, but it does. Like I said, it happened on my laptop for a while, but would generally just shutdown or minimize the movie & bring up a warning window.

This is the path for windows 7.

Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings

There was a Nvidia black screen glitch - Only on certain Nvidia based video cards. The screen would go black, but the game seemed to be continuing. Sounds could be heard, it seemed as if the character was being moved by the keyboard. This was fixed by a Nvidia driver upgrade.

Does this sound like what you have?

If you have to power down to recover, it could be an overheating or failing Video card. If it was from the game, you should be able to Alt-tab to the desktop, or ctrl-alt-del to the Task manager.

well i have the latest driver installed for my graphics card, also the game doesnt seem to be continuing, the sound "crushes" too.

As i said, i am unable to alt-tab or ctrl-alt-del, the computer totally dies on me.

@Ginny: it could be a hardware issue, but what puzzles me is that i can play games like the Witcher 2 which demand more from the pc without problems...

I've heard that 'going to sleep' is how some computers deal with being over taxed. If the other games you are playing aren't as taxing as skyrim, it could be why you can play them just fine.

Over time, playing an over taxing game can make your computer less and less able to play such a game, the heat gets to it after a while.
