How to Upgrade to Skyrim patch 1.8 without breaking (most) mods?

Hi there,

 

Because I accidentally overwrote some of my mods with the new Creation Kit (thanks Steam for updating it without telling me! :verymad: ) I now have many mods that are unplayable with my current, stable build of Skyrim (1.7).

I have been forced to upgrade to get these mods to run again in my game. However, I don't want to ruin all my other mods--and I've heard that upgrading to the latest version will make many (most?) of my mods unplayable.

 

I have SKSE and related mods, Script Dragon and a mod, and about 100 other mods--some steam, some from Nexus.

 

 

 

Should I update Skyrim to the latest patch? How do I go about doing it without ruining my mods? Thanks.

To tell you the truth, I don't think there's a surefire answer. Your particular combination of mods, load order and settings are unique and unpredictable. I couldn't start Skyrim initially after the 1.8 update, but updating SKSE fixed that. Elsewhere I found a fix to get the creation kit working again so as far as I can tell, I'm fully up and running again. I don't think there's any answer really, if you can't somehow roll back to the old version. On the basis that you have 1.8 and cannot change it, it may well be up to mod authors to update their mods if they don't work with the latest version.

 

Though there's no discernible difference between 1.7 and 1.8 I think it's probably worth accepting the update. Saying that, it sounds like you have mods that don't work now, and suspect others won't after the update. So you have to ask yourself which is worse, the ones that don't currently work or the ones that might not? :-) It could be that opening up the troublesome few in the CK and just resaving them is all that's needed. Don't forget to update the script extenders if you do.

thank you fror sharing your problems.

I have one somewhat similar: I'm still playing with 1.7.7 but the CK doesnt work normally.

If i open my mod and modify it in CK, it wont work ingame (as if it doesnt exist - which means the game works perfectly but the mod is absent)).

 

So Kings Gambit, could you please share how you managed to rollback to the previous CK version? I can't find out how to do that.
