Changing types of meshes (ingredients as plants for instance)

Hi, for various reasons I want to take meshes of ingredients or meshes of a harvestable plant with ingredients attached to it (e.g the poison bloom in the former case, various fruiting things in the later case). Can anyone give me any pointers for this - things like how meshes work or how I might be able to do this in particular. If I just use it as an ingredient it won't be attached to the ground, if I make it BSLeafAnimNode it isn't harvestable (but is attached to the ground. Any pointers/links would be very useful.
